Essay Writing: Cause and Effect
Money Heist
Alejandra Gomez
The Mastermind Behind the Heist
Money Heist, a Spanish television series, is known for being a worth binge-
watching series. The plot revolves around a group of eight robbers who attempt to
succeed in the biggest bank heist in history, but without stealing a single euro. They
break into The Royal Mint of Spain and stay there for as long as it would take to print
€2.4 billion in unmarked bills. It may sound as a pretentious plan, but the
mastermind behind the operation, known as “the Professor”, had even the smallest
detail calculated.
Before the group enters the Mint, they are given three rules by the Professor to
pull off this meticulously crafted theft as cleanly as possible: No one can reveal their
real name, there must be no personal questions, and personal relationships are not
allowed. What caused this mysterious man to commit this crime? The Professor,
whose real name is Sergio Marquina, spent most of his childhood prostrate in a bed
of San Juan de Dios Hospital in San Sebastian. There, his father frequently told him
stories about robberies. At first, he thought all those stories were extracted from
movies, but when his father was shot at the door of the Hispano-American Bank, he
realized that those stories were actually the robberies he committed. Since then, he
started planning the biggest heist in history.
He had not updated his DNI since he was 19 years old, therefore he did not have a
police record; he planned everything so the robbers were seen as "heroes" for the
population. As the Professor needed to be one step ahead of the police, he befriends
Raquel Murillo, the inspector in lead of the heist, and eventually falls in love with
her. He uses a false identity by the name of Salvador Martin, or Salva. Raquel and
Salva connect immediately, she shares her personal problems as well as information
from the investigation, which is exactly what he was looking for. This relationship
with Salva blinded Raquel from suspecting of him, even when other inspectors did.
Even though he calculated every detail, falling in love with Raquel was not part of
the plan. Therefore, what started as a relationship that would benefit his operation
eventually became his downfall. The Professor found himself constantly in a plight,
trying to balance his secret identity as the brain behind the heist and his casual
encounters with the inspector of the heist. One day, Raquel tried to set a trap for the
Professor, but it did not succeed. However, in a date with Salva, he carried a hint,
which made Raquel tie all the loose ends and finally discover his real identity.
The Professor had spent all his life planning everything so that any mishap that
occurred would not affect the outcome of the operation. He followed his father’s
footsteps but, in a different way. Still, both of their plans were limited. His father
never calculated getting killed after years of experience, and the Professor never
planned falling in love, after years of developing the heist. In the beginning, no one
in the group of robbers had something to lose, including him. Afterwards, due to his
unplanned romance, he gained something to lose. This proves that every cause has
an effect; therefore even the most meticulous plan has a collateral damage that was
never devised.
