LESSON PLAN

December 4, 2019 – 12:45 – 2:15

Grade: 2 POS: Art Lesson Title: Elves

Overview of lesson
100 – 150 words – Concise and clear description

Students will create a type of self-portrait with this project. Students will use a printed picture of
themselves to turn themselves into an elf. A writing piece will compliment this art project. The
writing piece is an application to be an elf. This will be incorporated into the students
Christmas books so it is important that they learn how to take their time to their best work. The
lesson is all coloring cutting and gluing which will allow students to do something they are very
familiar with while taking their time and really trying to do their best work.

Lesson Procedures (Steps)

Introduction (time): 15 minutes

Students will be sitting on the dots for this portion of the lesson
- Tell students that we are going to make kind of a self portrait but instead of drawing our
face we are going to print out a picture of each of the students faces
- Tell students you are going to be making an elf
- Show students the final products
- Tell students the first thing they need to do is color the background
o Tell students they will use a ruler and a red pencil crayon to make the lines and
then with the pencil crayon or crayon they have to color the red lines to look like
a candy cane
o Tell students that they need to take their time coloring and do their best work for
their Christmas book
- Tell students once they are done with the background they can then begin on coloring
their elf’s outfit
o Show students the template and show them exactly where each piece goes
based on the final product
o Tell students that they can only use marker to color this in because it will make
the elf pop more than the background
- Tell students once they are done coloring in their elf outfit they can then cut each one
out and start gluing everything onto the paper
- Tell students they will get a handout of their head to cut out and glue once their elf is
glued on
MOVEMENT ACTIVITY AND THEN GET STUDENTS TO SIT IN A CIRCLE

- Tell students to sit in a circle on the floor and you are going to go over each step with
them so they know exactly what to do
o Start with the first step of coloring the background
o Show students how to use their ruler to draw lines with a red crayon
o Tell students once their entire page is filled they can then go back and color but
2
only with pencil crayon or crayon NO MARKER for the background
- Tell students that once they are done coloring the background they will move on to color
the elf outfit
o With the good copy show students how they can make different designs
o Tell students that they are only using Christmas colors for this in marker
o Tell students that its ok if they go out of the lines a bit because they will be
cutting these out
o REMIND STUDENTS to take their time its not a race to get done first
- Move on to show students what each piece is
o The shirt the legs, the mittens, the shoes, the collar and the cuff
 Tell students that for the cuffs one of them has the word on it so when they
cut it out they can flip it over and use the other side to color so the word
does not show
- Ask if students understand what they need to do
o Remind students that they need to put their name on the back and then start with
the background only using pencil crayon
o Then they will move on to coloring their elf outfit and cutting it out
- Tell students we will go over the last instructions in a little bit but we are going to get
started on all the drawing and coloring
- Stand up and pick students who are sitting quietly to come up and get their template
and plain piece of paper
o Do so until all students have received everything they need
Body (time): 1 hour
- Students will be working on all their coloring during the beginning of the body
- After about 20 - 25 minutes (or gauge how fast students are working or slow)
o Get students attention and ask them to come back to the dots so the instructor
can explain the rest of the project
- Once students are siting in a circle quietly explain the following instructions
o Tell students that once they are all done coloring and cutting everything they then
need to start gluing
o As the instructor is going over the steps with the students the instructor should
write the gluing step son the board
 Showing with an example tell students that they need to put their elf in the
very middle of the paper – not to high not to low not to much to one side
 Tell students to first glue the shirt on but leave a little bit not glued at the
bottom so they can add the legs
 Next show students how to tuck the legs underneath the shirt and then
glue the rest of the shirt down
 Next students will have to glue the shoes mitts collar and cuffs (cuffs after
shoes)
 After that tell students that they will have their face to cut out and glue just
above the shirt – REMIND STUDENTS OF HOW TO CUT THEIR FACE
OUT – JUST THEIR HEAD AND NECK??
 Tell students once their face is glued on they can then glue the hat on top
of their head
- Ask students if they understand
- Remind students the steps are on the board and if they forget a step ask someone
instead of guessing so they don’t forget to glue anything
- Tell students that while they are continuing to color or starting to glue the instructor will
hand out their picture to them
3
- Allow students to continue to work assisting students as needed

Closure/ Reflection (time): 10 minutes

- With 5 minutes left before it is time to clean up get students attention and tell them how
much time they have left
- After 5 minutes get students attention again and tell them exact instructions for cleaning
up
o Remind students of name on their paper
o Tell students where to hand in their work
o Tell students what to clean up
o Tell students all the paper cuttings need to be picked up off the floor
o Tell students after the room is just as clean as before we start they can then get
read for recess
- Assist students and make sure they are actually cleaning up
