Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Lesson Title:
Knowing There, Their, and They're
Objectives:
Students will be able to explain when to use each form of their, there and they're.
Students will be able to use those 3 words in different sentences.
State Standards:
4.2 Read grade-level texts orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, expression,
intonation, and phrasing on successive readings
4.3 Use personal, possessive, and indefinite pronouns.
Context: I am teaching this lesson because it is something students are going to need to know
for the rest of their lives. So far in this spelling unit we have been taking many spelling tests on
word families like words that end in aw, eat, an. We are taking a little break to learn about these
3 words. Students will have little to no knowledge coming into this unit, that is why we are
teaching them it now. After this unit we will finish up our word families and take our final test on
this unit.
Data: For this lesson students will be in 3 groups based on their past few spelling quizzes, i
have a good understanding of who need extra time on spelling and who does not. Data will be
collected at the end of this lesson by a worksheet that we will do at the end of class for the
groups.
Materials: The materials used will be a mini white boards, blank paper and pencils, and a tablet for
each students in the groups with quizlet downloaded onto it.
Detailed paragraphs from here on down.
Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes):
In this introduction I will play this video from Khan Academy
https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/grammar/usage-and-style/frequently-confused-
words/v/there-their-theyre-final and explain to students what we will be doing for the rest of
class. After that I will tell each of the students their groups and ask if they have any questions.
The material will already be set up so I am not wasting class time doing so.
Teacher Directed (-10 minutes): In this section students will grab a white board and
marker. I will have them sit in a U shape around me I will hold up either they're there their and
they will have to explain to me on the white board when to use that word. If students are
confused then we will take extra time to go over that word and talk about what it means and
when to use it
Collaborative (10 minutes): In this group students will have a big blank sheet of paper,
they will have to work together to come up with as many sentences as they can in 10 minutes
using they're there and their. once on minute is left the students will g turn their paper into the
desk and the front of the room so other students cant see their work.
Independent Digital (10 minutes): In this group students will get a tablet and go onto the
quizlet app and do a matching game for the three words. How it will work is a sentience will pop
up like " BLANK are going shopping" and they will have to math whatever word works for that
sentence. One 5 minutes is up they can get with a partner from that groups and go over the flash
cards on quizlet that i have premade. One students will read the sentence and the other student
will have to tell their partner what word they think is correct.
Closure (10 minutes): For the final activity students will first clean up the classroom of
any mess they made during the rotations then they will come back to their desks a have a seat
quietly, I will then ask them to take out a pencil and I will pass out a work sheet. Students will
have the remainder of class to independently work on the their, they're and there worksheet and
turn it in for a grade.
Rationale:
(Multimedia 1= App or website): I will be using the free app quizlet for my independent
digital content. This app lets students work at their own pace and allows them to do what
helps them learn best. It gives students an interactive way to learn instead of just sitting
there listening to the teacher talk. This is a good app because it allows students to do
different things and not just one thing. Many students use it as a reliable study tool.
(Multimedia 2= App, website, video, educational game, song, podcast, etc.): I will be using
a video for the introduction. Videos are good for an introduction because it is not just the
teacher talking it is someone else. I choose this video because it was shot and simple, if it was
too long students would become unengaged. In the video the guy also had good way to
remember the 3 sound alike words. for example for there, he said where and there go together,
"where is my dog" THERE is my dog. little tricks like this always help students remember things. I
know khan academy is of high-quality because a lot of teacher and professors rely on it.
