Charm Strikes the Sight but Merit Wins
the Soul
Charm means physical charm which has an unfailing power of pleasing the mind of others. It focuses
attention and wins admiration, attachment and love, but it goes to certain limit and here the necessity of
merit arises.
Charm generates a shallow superficial pleasure in the mind by dazzling the vision and tuning the
imagination. On the contrary, merit works through wining the soul slowly but steadily and conquest their
made lasts a lifetime. A handsome lady with Hellenistic feature, evokes admiration from the onlookers
though evokes may be ugly looking inwardly.
There can be a musician whose physical appearance is not appealing, but his music fascinates the world.
Intellectual and spiritual charm is more powerful than physical charm. Socrates, the greatest thinker of
the world, was physically repulsive but people loved him madly for his principles and convictions.
Hazrat Bilal who wore a dark complexion was very close to the Holy Prophet for his intrinsic qualities of
character. Likewise Nelson Mandela owing to his charismatic personality has won the title of Century
Tower. Such like personages enter into the fold of history and time dare not dim their brilliance.
Tis not the fairest from that holds the mildest, purest soul within, tis not the richest plant that
holds the sweetest fragrance in. (Dowes)
Appearances are often deceptive and things are not what they seen. The world is full of “goodly apples
rotten at the core”, and new generally judged more from appearances than from reality because they do
not possess penetrating eyes.
Same goes for modern civilization which is skin deep only and on scratching its inwardly monster
will come out.
