2
OFFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY

The Gila Ridge Hawk defense is defined by 3 core principles:

1) Being PHYSICAL
2) Effectively COMMUNICATING
3) Playing as a TEAM

#1 Being PHYSICAL

Football is a full contact sport. It is one of few sports were two men must compete directly
against each other, one dominating the other. Being so, it is a sport that is highly physical in
nature. Both as an individual and as a team, physicality will be the determining factor in weather
you will succeed or fail in attempting to defeat your opponent.

#2 Effectively COMMUNICATING

Communication is the single most important factor in regards to entire group of individuals
experiencing success in achieving a goal together. Every individual must do their part in
communicating to the group, with everyone together creating a solid and clear line of
communication. In critical situations, communication can be the deciding factor in what the
specific outcome will be.

#3 Playing as a TEAM

In any athletic arena, the team represents what is great about sports. The team represents a group
of individuals from several different backgrounds, with different religions, ethnicities,
socioeconomic status and many other differences. Regardless of these differences, these
individuals come together to achieve a goal that is much more rewarding than any individual
goal, simply because a team goal is much more difficult to achieve.

3
STYLE OF OFFENSE

This offense is a Spread Option style offense. The offense is

flexible, as it contains a variety of alignments and individual
adjustments. These allow the offensive package to be multiple in
nature.

The offense is predicated on a conservative approach. With this

type of approach, the offense will focus on controlling time of
possession and holding onto the football. The priority is to use the
running game to set up the passing game.

The goal of the offense is create a horizontal stretch in the running

game and a vertical stretch in the passing game. The opponent will
be forced to defend the entire field, allowing for particular areas
of the field to be vacant. The offense can then easily attack those
areas.

4
KEYS TO VICTORY

1) Be Prepared – study the opponent and know what

their strengths and weaknesses are

2) Know your assignment – know what you are being

asked to do on every play (offense, defense, special
teams)

3) Communicate – establish and maintain a line of

communication both with teammates and coaches

4) Understand the Situation – know what the specific

situation is and when as well as what could possibly
happen

5) Play Every Play – give complete concentration to the

task at hand and do your job

5
2019 OFFENSIVE GOALS

1) Score more than 21 points per game

2) Score every single time in the Red Zone

3) No more than 1 turnover per game

4) Convert on every 3rd Down

*These are goals that we are going to achieve every game*

16
OFFENSIVE HUDDLE

The offense will use a circle huddle before each play. Backs and receivers will align closest
to the Quarterback on each side. Linemen will align directly in front of the Quarterback.
The Quarterback will set the huddle 10 yards from the ball.

Huddle Procedure
1) Center will call “Huddle” for all players to huddle up
2) Quarterback will look to sideline to receive the play call
3) Quarterback will step into huddle and communicate the call, repeating call twice
4) Quarterback will finish by calling “Ready, Break” and players will disperse to spots

Example: “Pro Rt 26 Power, Pro Rt 26 Power…Ready Break”

17
OFFENSIVE COMMUNICATION

A. Getting the Call

 The call will be comprised of several parts (“Over, Slant Right, Sam Edge, Cover 2”)
1) Formation
2) Motion/Shift
3) Blocking Scheme/Pass Protection
4) Run/Pass Play

Huddle Play Calling Sequence

1. All 11 offensive players will huddle with quarterback who has vision on our sideline
2. Offensive Coordinator will make the call, giving a number that corresponds to a number
on the Quarterback’s wristband
3. Quarterback will verbally communicate the indicated play to the huddle
4. Quarterback will break the huddle

B. Changing the Call

 Anytime that a play call is going to be changed, “Check” will be used to verbally indicate
the change
 Offensive Coordinator will give wristband number to indicate the new play being called

Play Calls & Tempo

 Regular Tempo – Our normal game tempo

- Play calls will be made from the sideline with the Quarterback in the huddle

 Cheetah Tempo – Our no huddle tempo

- Play call will be made from the sideline with players in a muddle huddle

We will use our Cheetah tempo in situations in which we want to speed up the pace of the
game. The primary benefit of doing this is that the defense will not be prepared before the snap.
Players will muddle huddle, being close to their alignment from the previous call (the formation
will not be changed play to play due to the sake of trying to snap the ball quickly).

Example: 1st play – Pro Rt 26 Power, 2nd Play – Pro Rt Man Switch

 Sail
 Smash
 Switch
 Follow Single Side Concept Example
 Spot “Smash Right,” “Flood Left”
 Double Bubble
- “Right” or “Left” tells the side
 All Verts
that the concept will be ran to
 All Slants
 Flood
 Double Wheel Mirrored Concept Example
 Double Corner
 Tunnel “Double Wheel,” “All Slants”
 Zone Flood PA - “Double” or “All” indicates that
 Power Sail PA the same routes will be ran to
both sides

protections include both pocket and movement protections. Using
these schemes will allow for variation in the pass game.

PASS PROTECTION SCHEMES

 Man – One on One Protection
 Slide – Area, Out of the Pocket Protection
 Down – Gap Protection
 Max – 5 Man Solid Protection

SLIDE

 Used for bootleg passing game

DOWN

36
ROUTE TAGGING

To give variation to our passing game, we can “tag” or change

individual routes within any of our passing concepts. Meaning, we
can game plan to target a specific receiver or route, or we can give
defenses different looks while running the same concepts with
small changes.
