A BISHOP'S LIFE, LEGACY AND VISION OF JUST AND LASTING PEACE

A Service of Remembrance for the late Obispo Maximo Tomas A. Millamena

Hymn of Preparation “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace”

Call to Remembrance

Leader: O God of History, you once called a man to walk, live and proclaim just peace
People: We remember how he proclaimed about the establishment here on earth

Leader: O God of Freedom, you once called a man to be with the people, in their struggles
People: We remember the life he has lived and the legacy he has left for all of us in this nationalistic church
and the continuing ministry to the laborers

Leader: O God of Justice, you once called a man to lead and shepherd your church, the Iglesia Filipina
Independiente, to reclaim its heritage of faith and struggle and to remember the beginnings of this
humble and poor church and to set goals for the advancements of its mission to serve You and the
people, more importantly the neglected and marginalized sectors of the society.
People: We gather to remember Tomas A. Millamena, former Obispo Maximo, for the life and ministry he has
shared to your church, for his vision of just and lasting peace. We remember his entry into the
beyond. We remember the life he has lived and for providing us an example of prophetic witness in
these trying times of our history. Through his life and legacy, we praise you O God – Creator,
Redeemer and Sustainer!

Diyos na Aming Gabay

Prayer of Remembrance

Leader: O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day, your servant and shepherd Tomas. We
are grateful for the life you have given to him and for the sharing of his life to church members, his
family and friends, as an inspiration and example of our faith. Tender and Loving God we gather to
give thanks for the gift of life. Keep safely, your servant Tomas, in your care. Accept our prayers for
those who have died in Christ and who are buried with him in the hope of rising again. We make
this prayer through Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.

Liturgy of the Word

Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 61: 1-3:

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he
has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to
those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, warned the day of vengeance of our God; to
comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of
ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be
called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. - The Word of the Lord.

Kristo, Ikaw ang Sandigan #96
Buhay na Kasiya-siya
Gospel Reading: Matthew 5: 1-12
Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he
opened his mouth and taught them, saying:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall
inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sonsa of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for
righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.“Blessed are you when others revile you and
persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your
reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Kontakion for the Dead

Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with your saints,

where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

You only are immortal, the creator and maker of mankind;

and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and to earth shall we return.

For so did you ordain when you created me, saying, “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with your saints,

where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

Priest: Into your Hands, O merciful Savior, we commend Your servant, Tomas. We continue to pray that you
acknowledge him as a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own redeeming. Receive him into the
arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace and into the glorious company of the
saints in light through Jesus Christ our Lord.
