GABION WALLS FOR GATED STRUCTURES
SCOPE OF WORK
The work to be performed under construction of Gabion Walls for Bridges and Culverts shall
consist of furnishing, transporting of all materials consisting of but not limited to welded
galvanised wirernesh, stones for filling the wiremesh, final placing and filling of gabions with
stones, closing the lids, laying concrete coping on top, and performing all works related to the
item as shown on Drawings and as directed by the Engineer.
MATERIALS
The wire mesh shall be 100mm x 100mrn with 8 SWG wire hot dipped galvanized as per BS 729
after fabrication.
The gabion shall be filled with stone consisting of limestone, sandstone or equivalent rock Pieces
as approved by the Engineer. The rock pieces shall be dense, sound and angular. The stories shall
generally be cubical in shape with no dimension less than 125mm and larger than 200mm. The
Contractor shall propose the source of stone for approval of the Engineer.
The concrete coping on top of the gabion walls shall be of Class B using Sulphate Resistant
Cement in accordance with the applicable Specifications of Section of Contract Documents.
FILLING AND PLACEMENT OF GABIONS
Unless otherwise proposed by the Contractor, and approved by the Engineer, the gabions shall
be filled at the final location of placement. The filling operations shall conform with the
instructions of manufacturers of weld mesh gabions. In general the Contractor shall ensure that
filling by stones is packed tightly so that there are no apparent voids. The outer face of the
gabions should be carefully packed by hand with larger size stone. Gabion boxes shall be
overfilled with stone by 25mrn - 50mrn above their tops to allow for subsequent settlement. It
shall be ensured that the filling is adequate to produce a convex and not concave finish before
tying down of gabions.
The closing and wiring down of lids shall be done as soon as practicable after the filling
operation in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Lids shall be tightened firmly over
the filling. Individual gabions shall be tied with each other. For all securing tying at site. the
equivalent tying wire supplied by the manufacturer shall be used.
All operations for assembly placing filling and tying of gabions shall be subject to the approval
of the Engineer.
PLACEMENT OF CONCRETE COPING
The concrete coping shall be placed on top of gabions to the lines and grades shown on
drawings in accordance with the applicable procedures given in the specifications under Section-
5 of the tender documents. The concrete as placed shall be tamped as approved by the Engineer.
MEASUREMENT & PAYMENT
Measurement for gabions as placed shall be made as hundred cubic feet of volume weld mesh in
accordance with the sizes of the manufacturer. No separate Measurement shall be made of the
stone filling carried out in the gabions.
Unit rate shall constitute full compensation for completion of work specified herein arid
elsewhere in these specifications and as shown on drawings for construction of gabion walls for
bridges and culverts and all other work related to the itern.
Measurement of concrete for coping on top of gabions shall be made as shown on Drawings or
as approved by the Engineer. No separate measurement shall be made for concrete which has
gone into interstices of stone filling in gabions.
Unit rate shall constitute full compensation for completion of work specified herein and
elsewhere Iii the specifications and as shown On drawings for construction of concrete coping
with sulphate resistant cement on surface of gabions related thereto.
