Castellated and Cellular Beams

Castellated and cellular beams are hollow web steel beams created by cutting patterns in standard I-beams. Castellated beams have hexagonal openings while cellular beams have circular openings that can be arranged flexibly. While cellular beams have reduced shear capacity, both can be used as primary structures if openings are strengthened. They provide benefits like reduced weight, cost, and ability to run utilities through openings, though fabrication is more complex than standard I-beams. Common applications include industrial, parking, office buildings, stadiums, restaurants, and malls.

Castellated and Cellular Beams

Castellated and cellular beams are also known as hollow web steel build up sections. These are made
by applying a special technique to wide flange I-beam. This technique consists of making a cut in the
web of a wide flange beam in a corrugated pattern. The cut parts are separated and the lower and
upper parts are shifted and welded.

Castellated Beams
Castellated beams has a hexagonal shape of openings. This typically creates very small openings that
may require additional modification if larger items needed to fit through. The profile for any
castellated section is standard or fixed.

Cellular Beams
Cellular beams has a circular opening at regular centers throughout the fabrication process and its
major dimensions are completely flexible. Thus, the geometry of a cellular beam can be chosen to
match exact structural, aesthetic, or service requirements. Economies are made by adjusting the
geometry of a cellular beam to maximize its efficiency under specific loading conditions.

The flexible dimensions are:

H = Finished Depth

D = Cell Diameter

S = Cell Spacing

Cellular beams are more suitable for use as long span secondary beams than for primary beams, as
the shear capacity of the web is considerably weakened by the openings. However, they can be
designed for use as primary members by strengthening the openings where shear forces are very high,
either by infilling the openings or by using horizontal stiffeners.

Advantage and Disadvantage

ADVANTAGES OF CASTELLATED BEAMS IN DIFFERENT ASPECTS
Design Capable of increasing the depth without increasing the weight
Reduced overall mass of the structure and reduced foundation loads
Long spans are possible without the need for bracing
Eliminates extra interior posts and columns
Improved lighting
Lesser cost due to lesser steel weight
Maximized floor to ceiling heights, no dropped interior beams
Construction Erection time is faster compared with wide flange section
Possibility of conversion, disassembling and moving to another site
Low labor cost in construction
Possibility of running the MEPFS and ductwork through the holes
No need for shoring and scaffolding

DISADVANTAGES OF CASTELLATED BEAMS IN DIFFERENT ASPECTS

Design Shear carrying capacity is reduced due to holes in web
Fabrication Increased fabrication costs associated with the cutting and welding of section

Cost Consideration
The use of castellated and cellular beams in construction are more economical compared with wide-
flange steel sections. Even though the fabrication cost is higher than the wide-flange, the total
construction cost will still be lower due to the decreased total steel weight requirement.
