ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE
St. Joseph's College (Autonomous), is administered by the Society of Jesus or
Jesuits which is a catholic religious order founded in 1540 by Ignatius of
Loyola. The college was founded in 1882 by the Fathers of the French
Foreign Mission. This college bears a 135 year legacy of shaping the young
men and women for the society. The college is registered under the
Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society. It is re-accredited with “A” grade and
3.79 /4 CGPA by NAAC. The college is recognized as “College of Excellence”
by UGC. The education offered by the college is oriented towards enabling
students to strive for both academic and human excellence. The college
pursues academic excellence by providing a learning environment that
constantly challenges the students and supports the ethical pursuit of
intellectual curiosity and ceaseless enquiry. Human excellence is promoted
through courses and activities that help students achieve personal integrity.
The college strives to achieve holistic development by encouraging students
to participate in activity and need based learning.
THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
The Chemistry Department of St. Joseph's College was established in 1927.
Over the last nine decades the department has built up its reputation as one
among the best in business as far as imparting education in Chemistry is
concerned. We offer undergraduate, postgraduate courses and Ph.D
Programmes in Chemistry. The postgraduate courses are Analytical
Chemistry and Organic chemistry specializations. At present the department
has 27 faculty members out of which 24 hold Ph.D and 2 have M.Phil degrees.
The department has active research going on in the field of heterogeneous
catalysis, electro chemistry, biochemistry and material science. Over the
years the department has about 200 research publications and has produced
30 Ph.D scholars. Through its research activities the department has been
able to attract about two crores rupees of research grants from various
funding agencies. The department aims to achieve global standards of quality
in maintaining academic excellence by being proactive and open to new
opportunities and challenges in the frontiers of chemistry. The endeavour of
the department is to produce brilliant young chemists who by their scientific
knowledge, skills and social commitment would act as catalysts to bring
about positive changes for the benefit of humanity.
CATALYSIS SOCIETY OF INDIA
The Catalysis Society of India (CSI) was founded in March 1973 at Banaras.
The main mandates of the CSI are to: encourage catalysis research in India,
organize professional meetings between researchers, enhance mutual
interactions and encourage cooperation between industry and academia.
Catalysis research activity has spread across many organizations during the
past 46 years. During the last four decades, the catalysis community in India
has made significant strides both in applied and fundamental research. Many
catalysts and processes have been developed and commercialized, notably by
IIP, PDIL, IPCL/RIL, NCL, IICT and ACC in petroleum refining, petrochemicals
manufacture, fertilizers production and fine chemicals synthesis. CSI-
Bengaluru chapter was established in 2016 by eminent catalysis scientists
from various organizations in Bengaluru like PPISR, SABIC, SHELL, HPCL,
JNCASR, IISc., etc. The society is actively working on promoting research in
the area of catalysis and bringing together researchers from academia and
industry on one platform. During last year, CSI-BC had organized 23rd
International Conference Catalysis (CATSYMP-23) and more than 450
delegates from India and abroad had participated in the Conference. This
year also during July 2019, CSI-BC in association with Ramaiah University of
Applied Sciences organized International Conference on Advances in
Materials Research (ICAMR-2019). Thus CSI-BC is actively involving in
arranging Workshops & Seminars for the benefit of academia as well as
industry people in and around Bangalore.
