THE LION AND THE MOUSE
A Lion was sleeping peacefully when he was woken by something running up and
down his back and over his face. Pretending to be still asleep, the Lion slowly opened one
eye and saw that it was a little mouse.
With lightening speed the Lion reached out and caught the little mouse in one of his
large paws. He dangled it by its tail and roared, “I’m the King of Beasts! You’ll pay with your
life for showing me such disrespect.”
The Lion held the little mouse over his huge open jaws and prepared to swallow it.
“Please, please don’t eat me, Mr. King of Beasts, Sir,” squeaked the mouse. “If you
forgive me this time and let me go I’ll never, never forget it.”
“I may be able to do you a good turn in the future to repay your kindness,” it
squeaked.
“You, do me a favor!” roared the Lion with laughter. “That is the funniest thing I’ve
ever heard.”
Still laughing, the Lion put the mouse down on the ground and said; “You’ve made
me laugh so much I can’t eat you now. Go on, off you go before I change my mind.”
The little mouse scurried away as fast as its little legs could go. Not long after this the
Lion was caught in a trap by some hunters. They tied him to a tree with rope while they went
to get their wagon. The little mouse was nearby and came when he heard the mighty Lion’s
roar for help. The mouse gnawed the rope with his sharp teeth and set the Lion free.
“I know you didn’t believe me, but I told you I could help you one day,” squeaked the
little mouse. “Even a little mouse like me can help some one as big and strong as you.”
“Thank you my little friend. I won’t forget that lesson,” said the Lion as he ran away
before the hunters returned.

GOLDEN CUCUMBER
The story began when a lonely old couple met a stupid ugly giant. The couple had no
child but they were dying to have one. The giant said he could help them but with a term. So
these old couple made an agreement. The giant gave them a magic cucumber seed to grow a
child and when the child grew up, they had to give the child up.
The magic seed was planted in the yard. In weeks, a big cucumber came out of it.
They took the cucumber to their house and sliced it. There was a baby girl in it. They were
very surprise and happy. Finally, they had a child. The baby girl was named Timun Mas
(Golden Cucumber). Timun Mas became a nice girl. She loved her stepparents and always
obeyed them. She took care of them and never hurt them. Her stepparents loved her more and
more.
In short years, Timun Mas became a young girl. The day to give her up to the giant
was getting closer. The couple was worried. They could not fulfill their promise to the giant.
They loved Timun Mas too much to give her up. Therefore, they were looking for a way to
break the promise.
In the afternoon, the giant came to their house. He wanted to take Timun Mas as their
agreement. The old couple saw the giant coming. They told Timun Mas to run away.
“Why I have to run away?” Timun Mas asked.
“Because the giant wants to eat you,” answered her stepparents. Timun Mas looked pale. She
was afraid to be eaten by the giant. Her stepparents gave her cucumber seed, needles, salt and
fermented shrimp paste. “Use these for your protection,” they said. Timun Mas went out from
the kitchen door. Her stepparents went to front to meet the giant.
“Where is Timun Mas? I come here to take her,” the giant asked in his loud voice.
“She was not here,” the old couple answered with frightened tremble.
“Where is she?” he asked again.
“She left”
“Are you trying to cut our agreement?” the giant asked angrily.
The old couple got more trembles. “We couldn’t give her. We loved her too much”.
The giant eyes were wider. He was very angry. He chased Timun Mas. Timun Mas
saw the giant. She spread the cucumber seed. Suddenly, there were large cucumbers between
them. Timun Mas run faster. The blocked cucumbers did not hold the giant. He could smash
the cucumbers easily. Then he chased her again. When he was getting closer, Timun Mas
spread the needles. Suddenly, there were bamboo trees growing from the land. The giant run
the blockade. His body was wounded because of the trees were sharp. However, the giant
would not give up. He was still chasing Timun Mas. Timun Mas run again. And when he
almost got her, she spread the salt. Suddenly, the land became an ocean. The giant tried to
swim. Although he almost drowned, he was still chasing Timun Mas. Then Timun Mas
spread her last weapon –the fermented shrimp paste- and suddenly the ocean became a mud
ocean. The mud sucked the giant until his head. Then he never showed up again.
Timun Mas then went home. Her stepparents were very happy to see their daughter home

MALIN KUNDANG
Long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatera, lived a woman and
her son, named Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang's father had passed away when he was a
baby, and he had to live hard with his mother.
Malin Kundang was a healthy, diligent, and strong child. He usually went to the sea to
catch fish, and brought it to his mother, or sold it in the town.
One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing as usual, he saw a merchant's ship which
was being raided by a small band of pirates. With his brave and power, Malin Kundang
defeated the pirates. The merchant was so happy and asked Malin Kundang to sail with him.
Malin Kundang agreed.
Many years later, Malin Kundang became a wealthy merchant, with a huge ship, loads
of trading goods, many ship crews, and a beautiful wife. In his journey, his ship landed on a
beach. The villagers recognized him, and the news ran fast in the town: Malin Kundang
became a rich man and now he is here. His mother, in sadness after years of loneliness, ran to
the beach to meet her beloved son again.
When the mother came, Malin Kundang, in front of his well dressed wife, his crews
and his own glory, denied to meet that old, poor and dirty woman. For three times she begged
Malin Kundang and for three times yelled at him. At last Malin Kundang said to her
"Enough, old woman! I have never had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly peasant!" Then he
ordered his crews to set sail.
Enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if he didn't
apologize. Malin Kundang just laughed and set sail.
In the quiet sea, suddenly a thunderstorm came. His huge ship was wrecked and it was too
late for Malin Kundang to apologize. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship, fell on a
small island, and suddenly turned into stone.

SURABAYA
A long time ago in East Java there were two strong animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was
a shark and Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea. Actually, they were friends. But when
they were hungry, they were very greedy. They did not want to share their food. They would
fight for it and never stop fighting until one of them gave up.
It was a very hot day. Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya
saw a goat. “Yummy, this is my lunch,” said Baya.
“No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy! I had not eaten for two days!” said Sura.
Then Sura and Baya fought again. After several hours, they were very tired. Sura had
a plan to stop their bad behavior.
“I’m tired of fighting, Baya,” said Sura.
“Me too. What should we do to stop fighting? Do you have any idea?” asked Baya.
“Yes, I do. Let’s share our territory. I live in the water, so I look for food in the sea. And you
live on the land, right? So, you look for the food also on the land. The border is the beach, so
we will never meet again. Do you agree?” asked Sura.
“Hmm... let me think about it. OK, I agree. From today, I will never go to the sea again. My
place is on the land,” said Baya
Then they both lived in the different places. But one day, Sura went to the land and
looked for some food in the river. He was very hungry and there was not much food in the
sea. Baya was very angry when he knew that Sura broke the promise.
“Hey, what are you doing here? This is my place. Your place is in the sea!”
“But, there is water in the river, right? So, this is also my place!” said Sura.
Then Sura and Baya fought again. They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya's tail. Baya
did the same thing to Sura. He bit very hard until Sura finally gave up. He went back to the
sea. Baya was very happy. He had his place again.
The place where they were fighting was a mess. Blood was everywhere. People then
always talked about the fight between Sura and Baya. They then named the place of the fight
as Surabaya, it’s from Sura the shark and Baya the crocodile. People also put their fight as the

FOX AND CAT
One day a cat and a fox were having a conversation. The fox, who was a conceited creature,
boasted how clever she was. 'Why, I know at least a hundred tricks to get away from our
mutual enemies, the dogs,' she said.
'I know only one trick to get away from dogs,' said the cat. 'You should teach me some of
yours!'
'Well, maybe some day, when I have the time, I may teach you a few of the simpler ones,'
replied the fox airily.
Just then they heard the barking of a pack of dogs in the distance. The barking grew louder
and louder - the dogs were coming in their direction! At once the cat ran to the nearest tree
and climbed into its branches, well out of reach of any dog. 'This is the trick I told you about,
the only one I know,' said the cat. 'Which one of your hundred tricks are you going to use?'
The fox sat silently under the tree, wondering which trick she should use. Before she could
make up her mind, the dogs arrived. They fell upon the fox and tore her to pieces.

LAST WORDS
One day a girl, Sara, who was fifteen years old, came home from school in a very bad mood.
Shehad a fight with her best friend that day and it hadn't turned out well at all.
"Sara!" her mom yelled. "What are you doing? You know to do your chores right when you
get home! And you're late!"
"Coming, Mom!" Sara yelled, getting up and stomping towards the kitchen. "What?" she
snapped as her mother gave her a stern look, annoyed.
"You'd better straighten up your attitude, young lady," her mom warned, "or you'll be
grounded."
"Whatever." Sara began to throw around the dishes in the sink, trying to make as much noise
as she possibly could. A plate cracked and cut her hand. Sara cursed.
"Sara!" her mom exclaimed. "How dare you use that language! Go to your room!"
"No!" Sara yelled, throwing down the towel she was using to wipe the blood off her hand.
"Do you want to say 'no' one more time and see what happens?" her mom asked. She looked
furious.
"Sure," Sara said sarcastically. "No."
"How dare you!" Her mother slapped her.
Sara shrank back, staring incredulously at her mom. She had never hit Sara before.
"I HATE YOU!" Sara screamed before running out of the house.
"Sara, get back here!" her mom yelled, running after her.
"Leave me alone!" Sara screamed, running across the street. "I HATE YOU!" she screamed
again.
She continued running until she heard the sound of screeching tires and a scream. She turned
around, hoping that it wouldn't be what she thought it would be....
People were crowding around Sara's mother, who was laying in the middle of the street,
looking broken, bloody.
"NOOOO!" Sara screamed, running over and pushing through everyone to kneel by her
mom. "Oh no, oh no...."
Her mom wasn't moving or breathing. She was gone. Sara tipped back her head and wailed to
the sky, sobbing so hard it hurt.

One hot day, an ant was seeking for some water. After walking around for a moment, she
came to a spring. To reach the spring, she had to climb up a blade of grass. While making her
way up, she slipped and fell unintentionally into the water.
She could have sunk if a dove up a nearby tree had not seen her. Seeing that the ant was in
trouble, the dove quickly put off a leaf from a tree and dropped it immediately into the water
near the struggling ant. Then the ant moved towards the leaf and climbed up there. Soon it
carried her safely to dry ground.
Not long after at that, there was a hunter nearby who was throwing out his net towards the
dove, hoping to trap it in this way.
Guessing what he should do, the ant quickly bit him on the heel. Feeling the pain, the hunter
dropped his net and the dove flew away quickly from this net.
