Hands On Activity-Relationship Mass and Weight PDF

This document describes an experiment to investigate the relationship between the mass of an object and its weight. Students will measure the mass of various objects using a triple beam balance and their weight using a spring balance. They will record the measurements in a table and graph the results. They are asked to hypothesize the relationship between mass and weight, identify the independent and dependent variables, draw a graph, and calculate the weight of an astronaut on the moon to determine if a classmate's statement is correct. The conclusion should answer whether mass or weight changes when moving to another location with different gravity.

Hands-On Activity
What Is The Relationship Between The Mass Of An Object And Its Weight?
Let's do the experiment!

This activity is all about experimenting with different objects and see what the relationship between mass
of an object and its weight (gravitational force). Work in groups of 2 or 3 as you follow the instructions to
do this experiment.
INVESTIGATIVE QUESTION:
What is the relationship between the mass of an object and it's weight?
HYPOTHESIS:
Write a hypothesis for this investigation.

MATERIALS and APPARATUS:

 Object with different mass
 Spring balance
 Triple beam balance
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Measure the mass of each object on the triple beam balance.
2. Calculate the weight of each object by formula W = m x ag
3. Measure the weight of each object with the spring balance.
4. Record the mass and matching weight in the results table.
5. Draw a graph of your results.
RESULTS:

Record your results in the following table. (ag = 10 m/s2)

QUESTION:
1. What is the dependent variable (variabel yang terikat atau dipengaruhi yang lain)?

2. What is the independent variable (variabel tidak terikat, bebas, atau tidak dipengaruhi yang lain) ?

3. Draw your graph in the space provided below. Your graph should be a straight line.

4. Astronout A has a mass of 78 kg. His friend, Sam says that he would weight 24 N on the Moon. Is Sam
correct? Explain by using a calculation.

CONCLUSION:
Write a conclusion for this investigation (the conclusion should can answer the investigative question and
the hypothesis)
