Nursing Care Plan Cord Care

After assessing the risk of infection for a newborn's umbilical cord stump, the nurse provided education to the mother on proper cord care techniques. The nurse taught the mother to clean the cord using a hygienic method, assess the skin around the base of the cord, practice proper hand washing, apply betadine and alcohol to the cord tip, and protect the integrity of the skin. After one hour, the mother demonstrated she learned how to properly care for the umbilical cord stump.
