Engineers' Guide: Car Park Shade Design

This document provides a design calculation for a car parking shade structure with a PVC fabric roof supported by structural steel columns. It includes wind load calculations according to British standards to determine design wind speeds and pressures. It also describes using software tools to analyze the fabric and supporting steel structure to ensure the design meets standards for structural analysis and member design.

DESIGN CALCULATION

CAR PARKING SHADE STRUCTURE

GENERAL DESIGN NOTES

 This PVC fabric shade structure supported by structural steel Columns. The shape of the
fabric is idealized into a duo-pitch canopy roof.
 Wind Load Calculation: Wind Load calculation is performed using BS:6399-2-1997
 All the design of structural steel elements is performed using BS:5950-1-2000.
 Foundation design is based on BS 8110
 Structural Steel Shall be Ciruclar Hollow sections
 All Connections bolts shall be grade 8.8
 Concrete Shall be M40

Analysis & Design:

There are two stages in the process of analysis and design

Stage-1: Fabric analysis

 The fabric analysis is performed using the software – Ixcube. It is a non-

linear program to perform the fabric analysis. In the fabric analysis, wind pressures
(as per the calculation) is applied on the prestressed fabric. The software performs
several iterations unless the results converge.

Stage-2 – Analysis and design of supporting steel structures.

 The reaction forces from Ixcube are extracted for all wind load cases and exported
to staad-pro. This staad-pro model is analysed for member forces and reactions.
Structural steel member design is performed using staad-pro itself as per BS:5950-
1-2000. Foundations are designed as per BS8110 for the forces obtained from the
Staad-pro analysis.
WIND LOAD CALCULATION
Wind Load calculation as per BS: 6399-2-1997
Basic wind speed (3 second gust) at 10m above mean sea level
45M/SEC m/sec
BS 6399-2-1997 require hourly mean wind speed. Hence, the basic wind speec (3 second
gust) needs to be converted to equivalent hourly mean wind speed.

Site condition - Site in country, closest distance to sea is 100Km.

For He=10m, and for the site condition as indicated above, terrain & building factor (Sb) Ref.
Sb(1) 1.62 cl:2.2.3.3)

Hence, the equivalent site wind speed (Vs) 27.7778

27.78 m/sec

Calculation of Effective wind speed

Terrain & Building factor, Sb is to be obtained based on cl:2.2.3.3

Effective Height, He 3 m
Closest distance to sea
upwind = 100Km
Site located in country
Referring to Table 4, BS6399-2-1997,
Sb 1.323

Vs x
Effective Wind speed Ve =
Sb
36.8 m/sec

Calculation of Dynamic Wind Pressure

(Ref cl:
Dynamic Wind Pressure q = 0.613 Ve2 2.1.2.1)

828.03 N/m2

0.83 KN/m2

Minimum Dynamic wind pressure 0.83 KN/m2

Refer, cl: 2.1.3.3 (b) of BS:6399-2-1997.

For free-standing canopies and building elements, the pressure
p q Cp Ca
Ca is the size factor, based on the diagonal dimensio (Ref. 2.1.3.4)
Diagonal Dimension, a 37 m
For curve-C, for the coresponding effective height and diagonal dimension, based on fig-4
Ca 0.86
Hence, pressure p = 0.7 Cp
Slope of the fabric is 20 degrees (Duopitch)
Refer to Table-14 of BS:6399-2-1997 for net pressure coefficient 'Cp' for duopitch canopy
roofs Maximum Cp (+ve) = 0.6

Minimum Cp (-ve) = -1.05 (Solidty ratio :0.84)

Downward wind
pressure = 0.6 x 0.705

0.42 KN/m2
Upwind pressure = 1.05 x 0.7

0.73 KN/m2
Fabric Analysis
Fabric Analysis Model in IX Cube:
Stress in the Fabric due to Wind Pressure:
Stress in the Fabric due to Wind Uplift:
Membrane Capacity Check:
Maximum stress in Membrane = 4.96KN/m

Membrane selected ,FERRARI 750 gsm

Tensile strength of membrane= 2800/3200 N/5cm (warp/weft)(Refer
membrane Data Sheet)
Select lower side value = 2800N/5cm
Convert in to KN/m = 56KN/m,
Consdering safety factor of 3.2 as per European design guide for Tensile
Structures

Allowable stress in the membrane = (56/3.2)=17.5> 4.096 KN/m

Hence Safe.
