ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the spelling ability and reading comprehension of 44 Grade 11 students in Tagum City, Philippines. The students' abilities were assessed using scales to determine their literal, interpretive, and critical levels of understanding. The results showed that the students' overall ability was at the interpretive level, with an average mean score of 1.80. This implies that the students have greater accuracy in spelling but room for improvement. Improving students' engagement in class and utilizing specific learning programs were recommended to enhance their performance. The review of related literature discussed that spelling is an important precursor to reading comprehension, and involves various linguistic skills.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to distinguish the spelling ability and reading comprehension of
the Grade 11 students of NDC Tagum Foundation Inc. The respondents of this study
were 44 Grade 11 students from section Kindness at NDC Tagum Foundation Inc. The
said respondents were selected through purposive sampling. Responses of each
student for each item were interpreted by the researchers using the given scale,
descriptive equivalent and interpretation. The first descriptive equivalent is the literal
level which means that the spelling of the students shows little accuracy and
understanding. Next is the interpretive level which indicates that the spelling of the
students show greater accuracy and greater understanding. And lastly, the critical level
which means that the spelling of the students shows mastery and full understanding.
Results showed that the grade 11 of NDC Tagum Foundation Inc. belongs to the
interpretive level and got the overall mean of 1.80 this means that their spelling ability
and understanding shows greater accuracy. This results further implies that the spelling
ability and reading comprehension of the students are average. Therefore the student
should be more interactive in the class for them to perform well. And for the teacher,
school and Principal they should utilize certain programs that can improve students
learning performance.
CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS RELATED LITERATURE
INTRODUCTION

Presenting spelling patterns and activities permits students to work the sounds
in words are the most successful strategies in teaching reading stated by Lucy
Rowland. It proves that spelling comes first before reading. Everyone needs to be able
to spell words as this leads to reading comprehension.
According to Snow, Griffin, and Burns, ( 2005 ) states that spelling and reading
raise and depends of the same mental representation of it firmly and available for
reading. Students spelling competencies play an important part in their reading
comprehension that reading comprehension lies in student ability to spell correctly
(Ritchey, 2008) as cited by (Johnson, 2013). The connection between spelling and
reading is so close that examiners consider that gaining knowledge of about spelling
tends to increase students reading comprehension. Learning about spelling plays a part
in reading comprehension including students capability to pronounce words correctly
and decode unknown word (Adams 1990) as cited by (Johnson, 2013).
Spelling is more than being able to memorize a given list of words in a week’s
time. Spelling involves applying the abilities and knowledge of the English language
received over time to all areas of knowledge Spelling is critical part of education at it
links and connects with reading, and content areas as well (Invernizzi and Hayes 2010)
as cited by (Uddeme, 2014). To achieve this general knowledge of the language and all
of its parts, students are required to directly instructed of the how’s what’s and why’s of
spelling. Students need to draw close the thought that spelling is how you form a phrase
of word so that others recognize it as well. They have to recognize that spelling is an
integral issue when studying and writing words. Additionally, it is essential for them to
realize that spelling is needed due to the fact that is permits people to communicate
correctly into studying and writing ( Uddeme, 2014). Teaching spelling must be clear so
that children can understand that the logic to spelling is critical (Alderman and Green,
2011).
Spelling difficulties in United States are a fundamental trouble for teenagers and adults.
As stated by the National Association of Adult Literacy (NAAL), 30 million adults, aged
sixteen and above, have to acquire a job application. Having no strong literacy skills,
post-secondary university and employment choices are few. Lack of reading limits
preferences for adults with beside disabilities 43% stay in poverty 50% have higher
hospitalization prices due to lack of ability to apprehend fitness information, and one in
five is unable to get entry to or use the internet (U.S. Department of Education, 2003).
Poor literacy competencies can additionally affect a person’s appreciation of job
opportunities. Fifty-seven percent of adults with disabilities consider that job possibilities
are confined due to their negative analyzing ability (Sanford, 2015).

Improving the reading speed comprehension skills is a basic demand for students
once they enter the call center industry is one of the consideration of ACCS students of
University Of Makati. It’s needed for the teacher’s to supply a several opportunities as
possible to enhance and to teach these students skills and ways they need to improve
their reading comprehension of the learners on the tertiary level particularly those that
are registered on Business Communication (Umali, 2012-2013).
In Tagum City, specifically in NDC Tagum Foundation, Inc, performance with
regards to spelling and reading comprehension is seen to be a challenge for Grade 11
students which prompted us, the researchers to conduct this study. We have conducted
a survey by asking some of the faculty in NDC Tagum Foundation, Inc, which teachers
considered the situation of the Grade 11 as a challenges. Exposure nowadays to
different ideas , people and products; internet and social media and viewpoints
increase rapidly as the changes in the society are some of the reasons why student are
facing trouble in their spelling and reading.
However, the researchers look forward that the present study shall make specific
contributions and generate new knowledge in relation to effective spelling and reading,
not just in NDC Tagum foundation, Inc but even to other school as well. It is in this
context that the researchers are interested to determine how spelling ability influences
reading comprehension for students to improve the teachers way of helping students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE


Presented in this section are the discussion of the independent and dependent
variable., spelling ability and reading comprehension respectively. The attributed
indicator for the spelling ability and reading comprehension is the backround knowledge
of the respondents. Parallel to this are the indicators of spelling ability and reading
comprehension namely: homophones, literal comprehension, interpretive
comprehension and critical comprehension.
Spelling Ability

Spelling is very important in reading. Research clearly shows that spelling


aids learning to read for young children and its likely that knowing about the significant
relationships between words will contribute to vocabulary growth and reading
comprehension for adults(MOATS,2005)
It is an important and complex skill that involves multiple components.
Including visual memory. Phoneme-grapheme awareness. Together with orthographic
and morphophonemic knowledge (Van Hell, Bosman and Bartelings,2003).
