Introduction

The Vashi Bridge, also known as Thane Creek Bridge, is a bridge, built across the Thane Creek that
connects the city of Mumbai at Navi Mumbai. The bridge links the suburb of Mankhurd in Mumbai
with Vashi in Navi Mumbai. It is one of four entry points into Mumbai (other three being the Airoli
Bridge, Mulund check naka and Dahisar check naka), and handles traffic directed towards the
region to the south and east of Mumbai.

The first bridge to connect Mumbai to Navi Mumbai was conceived by Adi Kanga and was built in
1973. The bridge is 1837m in length. Within two years of its opening to traffic, corrosion cracks
were noted on the bottom side of the stressed girders. This led to a series of extensive repairs
including external stressing’s. It was simultaneously decided to construct a new bridge to replace
the faulty one.

Construction on a new bridge began in 1987 and opened to traffic in 1997. The original Vashi
Bridge or the 1st Thane Creek Bridge remains closed to traffic. This bridge was constructed by U.P
State Bridge Corporation Ltd. for which it was awarded the most outstanding concrete structure
award.

The new bridge is also known as the 2nd Thane Creek Bridge. The lane expansion work on Vashi

Ratings
I met the toll naka guy at Vashi Toll. He shared his work pattern and helped me a lot to know a lot
more about them and their daily stressful work under the hot sun. According to me I rate myself a
9/10 as not only meeting the toll naka guy during the rush hours was a difficult task but also
knowing about them personally was a great difficulty.
Group efforts, collectively rated at 9 as everyone worked very hard and they managed to meet the
toll naka guy even during the rush hour which helped us to get information easily.
