Stone Cladding Design PDF

This document summarizes the stone cladding system used for the Ritz Carlton hotel in Bangalore. It describes the limestone cladding material, maximum panel size of 800mm by 720mm by 30mm thick. It then details the wall structure with a 60mm cavity and 80mm projection. Load calculations are provided for both vertical dead load and horizontal wind load. Based on these calculations, brackets models SM-S 04, SM-S 05 and SM-S 06 are suggested to support the stone panels, with HRD-UGS 10 x 100/30 anchors recommended for fastening.

STONE (M)ART CLADDING SYSTEMS

PROJECT : RITZ CARLTON, BANGALORE

Nature of work: External Dry Wall Cladding

Material : Limestone
Reference : BS: 8298, ASTM-C 1242, IS 875(part 3)

Design Factors:

Maximum size of the panel

h
l = 800mm
h = 720mm
t = 30mm
Density d = 26000 N/m3
t l Weight = l x h x t x d
= 450 N

Wall Structure:

WALL

Cavity C = 60mm
C
Projection K = 80mm

STONE (M)ART CLADDING SYSTEMS
Structure - edge spacing:

a) Minimum distance from the corner of the slab to the pin center should be 2.5 times
the slab thickness i.e. 2.5 x t = 2.5 x 30 = 75mm

Maximum distance from the corner of the slab to the pin center is 1/4th of the length
of the slab i.e. ¼ x h = ¼ x 720 = 180mm.

The proposed distance of pin from the corner of slab is 100mm.

b) The minimum pin center distance to the edge of the slab (across thickness) should
be 15mm.
The proposed pin center distance is 15mm.

Application type:

Vertical joints: Load bearing &

The load bearing brackets carry full restraint anchor
weight of the natural stones slabs in
vertical installation. Each bracket
bears half the weight of the slab on
the right and half the weight of the
slab on the left. Restraint brackets
hold the slabs below and restraining
them against wind pressure.

Load Principles:

Vertical (Dead Load) and Horizontal (Wind Load) loads are determined according to the
following diagram. The following principle is applied before designing a fixing system:

Dead Load per bracket Fdw = 450/2 = 225N

Wind load calculations:

Basic wind speed for Bangalore Vb= 33 m/s

k1 = 1.0 k2 = 1.2 k3 = 1.0 k4 = 1.0
Design wind velocity Vz = Vb x k1 x k2 x k3 x k4
= 33 x 1.0 x 1.2 x 1.0 x 1.0 = 39.6 m/s
Design wind pressure Pz = 0.6 x (Vz)2
= 0.6 x 39.6 x 39.6 = 941 N/m2

Wind load per bracket Fwp = (l x h x Qp)/2

= (0.8 x 0.72 x 941)/2 = 272N

Suggested Brackets:

Considering the design dead load and wind load, the following bracket systems are
suggested (refer enclosed data sheet):

SM-S 04, SM-S 05 & SM-S 06

The actual bracket (from among the ones specified) will depend upon the cavity and
projection.

Suggested anchor fasteners:

Refer HILTI data sheets enclosed.

The suggested anchor fastener is HRD-UGS 10 x 100/30
