Project Management

A. Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcome
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the increasing impact of project management
issues in practice from consideration of relevant problem based case examples.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of a critical awareness of project planning
(including, but not limited to, developing a work breakdown structure,
scheduling, costs and benefits, stakeholder management and risk management),
project monitoring control and effective project closure.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of project evaluation techniques, project lifecycle
concepts, and project management methodologies.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the role that projects play in an organisational
context, the role of the project manager, and people processes.

B. The Requirements

You are required to choose a project from your country. It could be a past project which had
been completed a couple of years ago; alternatively, it can also be an on-going project, which
is nearing its completion. The project can also be a part of a long-term programme of the
government or in a private sector. The nature of the project must be one of the following:
(i) Urban development project of a town/city.
(ii) Water management / river project
(iii) A new or an extension of a rail project

Then, you are required to produce a formally written assignment with thorough analysis
based on your exploration of the project details in 3,000 words. Ideally the report should
contain the key elements you have learnt in your Project Management module, which are
briefly provided in the learning outcomes above.

Note: Exception is to be granted to those students who could not genuinely identify the
project with the stated characteristics above from their country of origin due to some
unfavourable situation. These students may select projects with slightly different
nature or those from their neighbouring countries.

relevant or seminal theories are omitted all together in the content.
Indeed it may not be clear exactly which theoretical area or practical
problem the student is critically analyzing in the presentation.
 Sufficient issues are addressed in order to analyze the project
management and the student shows the ability to generate a required
level of independent thought processes, but which is inadequate to
achieve a higher grade due to inconsistency or due to insufficient
understanding.
 Adequate use of structure and terminology that shows an ability to
undertake disciplined analysis of the issues presented.
 Minimum level of the content and structure that indicates an ability
to evaluate and make logical conclusions regarding the issues that
encompass both practical examples and theoretical elements.
Pass
 Evidence that the theory behind the project management is clearly
(50 – 59)
understood but with certain aspects of the analysis being covered
more extensively than others that indicates a less insightful critique
of particular concepts.
 Evidence of an acceptable level of understanding of the possibilities
and limitations of the methodologies and models employed.
 Evidence of a minimum level of critical analysis and judgment
including justification of the criteria.
