Instructions for Completing the

Statement of Financial Support

Please read the following instructions carefully before completing and submitting the Statement of
Financial Support to Wayne State University.

Official sponsorship letters including details, terms and amounts of the award are to be attached to the
Statement of Financial Support. This form must be completed and submitted along with an original
bank statement or official letter of award from the sponsor as part of the admission process. Please note
that photocopies of the documents are not acceptable.

The United States Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations require that all interna-
tional applicants demonstrate their ability to meet educational and living expenses in order for the
university to issue a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20 or DS-2019). For this reason, this form must be
completed and returned regardless of the source of funding. Please complete the appropriate category of
page 2, section 3. Bank statement must be current; statements that are older than six months are not
acceptable.

If the applicant is married and plans to bring the spouse and dependent children to the United States,
additional funds are required to cover the expenses of the spouse and children.

The Wayne State University admissions office will not issue the Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20 or
DS-2019) unless the applicant has:

1. Provided proof of acceptable English proficiency;

2. Provided proof of adequate financial resources;
3. Been admitted to a full time program.

In addition, if admitted, the applicant will need to prove to the US consulate officer in the home
country that there are sufficient funds to cover the first year of study. Therefore, we suggest that you
request two original copies of all financial documents: one copy for you to keep and submit to the U.S.
Consulate and the other to send to WSU with the original application for admission.

Please return this completed form to:

Statement of Financial Support
(Required of all applicants seeking a Student or Exchange Visitor Student Status)
It is necessary that the information requested below be provided since very few students receive financial support from the university and
immigration regulations severely limit or prohibit employment in the United States for students holding non-immigrant status (F-1, J-1).

Because Wayne State University is a tax-supported institution, most financial aid funds are reserved for legal
residents of the United States. Normally, graduate students from abroad are eligible to apply for scholarships,
fellowships, and graduate assistantships only after having demonstrated exceptionally good academic progress
during the first year of their graduate study. However, some departments award graduate assistantships to foreign
applicants at the time of admission; please consult with the chair of the department to which you are applying.
Most assistantships do not cover costs for an entire calendar year. Proof of additional funds from other sources
listed below may be necessary before a certificate of eligibility for a student visa can be issued.
A non-resident is expected to provide funding for the first year of study (two semesters or eight months and a
four-month summer period) in addition to all transportation, housing, and miscellaneous costs.
