INSPECTIONS
1. General
A. General Inspection Criteria
(1) While inspection personnel do each of the specific inspections listed in this chapter, additional general inspections of
adjacent areas are to be done while access is available. These general inspections are done to find conditions
where more steps are necessary.
(2) When an area is exposed, wire bundles must be examined for chafing, proper security, and support. Make sure that
wire bundles are not attached to hydraulic tubes or lines.
(3) Inspection items listed are for specific components and systems. The entire inspection program requires a high
degree of professionalism and judgment by inspection personnel. This will make sure that all components and
systems are maintained and examined to supply the best safety standards.
(4) If a component or system is disturbed (due to maintenance being performed) after completion of an initially required
operational or functional test, then that specific test must be confirmed again after the completion of any maintenance
before returning the system or component to service. Refer to the appropriate chapter in this Maintenance Manual for
removal, installation, operational tests, and functional tests of components and/or systems.
(5) Some items or components require lubrication. Refer to Chapter 12, Scheduled Servicing - Description and
Operation, for lubricant, lubricating points and method.
(6) Refer to Chapter 6, Airplane Zoning - Description and Operation, for airplane zone definition.
(7) Do a preflight inspection after completion of the applicable inspection to make sure all required items are properly
serviced. Refer to the Approved Airplane Flight Manual.
(8) For record-keeping purposes, inspection items that are also required for Chapter 4, Airworthiness Limitations, have
been placed in intervals that begin with M. The interval for these items is defined by Chapter 4 and must be
accomplished at or before the listed interval. Chapter 4 items do not have a grace period.
2. Interval and Phase Cross-Reference for Inspection Time Limits
NOTE: Inspection requirements for the engines and vapor-cycle cooling system are defined by the
manufacturer. To make sure the latest inspection requirements as defined by the manufacturer are
completed, refer to the requirements at intervals published in those inspection documents.

B. The example above illustrates a sample task number. Beginning with word Task, numbers that follow indicate chapter,
section, and subject where inspection task text can be found. The two-digit function number indicates general classification
of task and may be found in Table 1. The last digit, just after function number, indicates sequence number. If same chapter-
section-subject and function is used for a different task, sequence number increments by one.
C. CD-ROM users may link from a highlighted task number to task text. Task numbers may be found in Inspection Time Limits
table or at any point throughout this manual where a task number is referenced.
D. Functions which may be used in this manual are listed in Table 1.
NOTE: The third digit of function is assigned sequentially, beginning with zero, to ensure a unique nine-

4. Definitions
A. Lubrication or Servicing Task
(1) Any act of lubrication or servicing for the purpose of maintaining inherent design capabilities.
B. Visual Check
(1) A visual check is an observation to determine that an item is fulfilling its intended purpose. The check does not
require quantitative tolerances. This is a failure finding task.
C. General Visual (Surveillance) Inspection
(1) A visual examination of an interior or exterior area, installation or assembly to detect obvious damage, failure, or
irregularity. This level of inspection is made under normally available lighting conditions such as daylight, hangar
lighting, flashlight, or drop-light and may require removal or opening of access panels or doors. Stands, ladders, or
platforms may be required to gain proximity to the area being checked.
D. Detailed Inspection
(1) An intensive visual examination of a specific structural area, system, installation or assembly to detect damage,
failure, or irregularity. Available lighting is normally supplemented with a direct source of good lighting at an intensity
deemed appropriate by the inspector. Inspection aids such as mirrors, magnifying lenses, etc. may be used. Surface
cleaning and elaborate access procedures may be required.
E. Special Detailed Inspection
(1) An intensive examination of a specific item(s), installation or assembly to detect damage, failure, or irregularity. The
examination is likely to make extensive use of specialized inspection techniques and/or equipment. Intricate cleaning
and substantial access or disassembly procedure may be required.
F. Operational Check
(1) An operational check is a task to determine that an item is fulfilling its intended purpose. The check does not require
quantitative tolerances. This is a failure finding task.
G. Functional Check
(1) A functional check is a quantitative check to determine if one or more functions of an item perform within specified
limits.
H. Restoration Task
(1) That work necessary to return the item to a specific standard. Since restoration may vary from cleaning or
replacement of single parts up to a complete overhaul, the scope of each assigned restoration task has to be
specified.
I. Discard Task
(1) The removal from service of an item at a specified life limit. Discard tasks are normally applied to so-called single
parts such as cartridges, canisters, cylinders, engine disks, and safe-life structural members.
