THE DANCE

• Involves a successive group of motions and steps rhythmically performed and timed to music.

• As an art - it tells a story, a set of moods or expression of an emotion.

• As a form of recreation - provided fun, relaxation, and companionship.

WHY DO PEOPLE DANCE?

• Dancing has been used in worship.

• Dancing has also played a role in courtship.

• Children dance because of the joy they feel.

• Some people dance to have fun or to entertain other.

• The field of dance therapy uses modern dance to help treat physically handicapped and
emotionally distributed people.

IMPORTANCE OF DANCE

• Dance Is by its nature the expression of emotions, feelings and opinions through the movement
and manipulation of the body.

• Dance very often finds itself in the form of telling a stay or conveying emotion through
choreography, set to a corresponding music score.

• Dance is therefore a vital form of expression; a medium which an be used to convey a message
effectively and powerfully.

• There is something about the beauty of seeing a highly trained and skilled body moving with
ease and grace through choreography that causes us to watch and take note. Combined with an
emotive music score, dance is a powerful tool.

DEVELOPMENT OF DANCE IN THE PHILIPPINES

• Philippine dance has a long history which was filled with struggles.

• Dances which were lived by the people based from the different myths and traditions blended a
traditional beauty.

• Filipino dance is a multi-Faceted reflection of the past experiences of the past and efforts to
enhance the technique in cultural diversity of the people.

• The traditional dance of the Philippines today is an exhibit of the western and eastern influence
from the different tribes.

• In the 1920

o This was the age of the blossoming for dance culture for the Filipinos
o It gained love and attention of the people due to the efforts of Dr. George Bocobo and
Ms. Leia Aquino.

• In 1954

o Dr. Bocobo together with his companions attended the Asian Native Folk Dance Festival
In East Pakistan where we received great amount of attention and praise.

• In 1957

o THE BAYANIHAN NATIVE DANCE GROUP

o They established the Dance Performance Center for Filipino cultural dancers.

• They have also performed with other places around the world to show the country's native life
and customs of Filipino through dance.

• They have also performed in the U.S., Canada. and Europe left; great mark on the history of
Philippine dance which was followed by the dance groups like the:

o Barangay Native Dance Group

o FEU's Students Dance Group

• The Philippine dance has overcome many difficult times and has been an Important tool In
promoting cultural change.

PHILIPPINE FOLK DANCES

• The graceful art of dance is seen among Filipinos.

• Filipinos are music lovers as well as good dancers.

• To Filipinos, dancing is a way for them to show entertainment.

• Our Folk dances are influenced by Spanish and European influences

• Still some dances insinuate Filipino traits which includes the Following:

 TINIKLING

• Our national dance

 ALCAMFLOR

• a dance that suggest the exotic aroma of scented kerchiefs with which the ladies tease
the gentlemen.

 BANGA

• Literally means CLAYPOT

• It is used as water for food containers.


• These clay pots are balanced on the head of Igorot women as they wind up and down
the mountain trail.

 BILAAN

• A dance that depicts the lively, simple movements of birds in flight and as they preen
themselves, beautifully portrayed tribal maidens.

 ITIK – ITIK

• A Philippine native dance interpreting the playfulness of duckling wading in the river.

 PANDANGGO SA SAMBALILO

• Is a flirtatious dance from Bulacan.

• It shows a barrio swain and his lady love play and dance with a native hat.

 SINGKIL
 A famous dance from Mindanao.

 This is an intricate dance where the dancers’ feet dart precariously in and out of a
complicated pattern of clacking bamboo poles.

• THE IFUGAO DANCE

• Depicts a Mountain tribe of the Philippines dancing to the sound of the “gangsa‟ (brass
gong).

• COMMUNAL DANCE

o In primitive times, early tribal culture dance was a methodology For survival.

• PRIMITIVE DANCE

o The search for magical mystery over nature through loss of self is the distinctive
characteristics of primitive dance

o A conscious dance, organized volitionally in its design, purpose and meaning

• RITUAL DANCE

o Represents a level, OF civilization where dance: celebrated mythology rather than magic

• BALLROOM DANCES

o Dances of public entertainment

o Usually in pairs in ballrooms, nightclubs, auditoriums or in public places

o PATTERN IN SPACE

o The path traced by the dancers Feet on the floor and the levels on which they
move

• MOVEMENT

o Bodily actions of the dancer that includes:

o Steps

o Gestures of the arms, hand and body and;

o Facial expression

• TECHNIQUE

o Skill of movement executed by the dancer

• MUSIC

o Auditory background to which a dancer moves

• COSTUME AND BODY PARAPHERNALIA

o Properties worn by the dancer that help reheat the message, customs, beliefs and
setting of the dance

• CHOREOGRAPHY

o Refers to the figures and steps in dancing that enables the dancers to perform a dance
in organized manner.

• SCENERY

o Background or setting where the dance is performed to make it more realistic and
enriching.
