Chapter 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research design, population and sampling
technique, research procedures and research instruments
Research Design
The purpose of the study is to know observe Booming Industry of electric
cigarettes as a gateway for a student transition in smoking
According to Astalin (2003), the design of qualitative research is probably
the most flexible of the various experimental techniques, encompassing a variety
of accepted methods. There are four major types of qualitative research design,
phenomenology, ethnography, grounded theory and case study.
The case study method was used in this study because it is well-suited in
answering the research questions appropriately and sufficiently. The strength of
the case study method is it allows for the examination of the phenomenon in
depth using various kinds of evidence obtained from interviews with those
involved (Yin, 2003). The researchers also used case study because the focus of
the study is more to describe and explain rather than prediction, and the variable
being studied is easily unidentifiable.
Research respondents
The participants for this study were ten senior high school students with in
the area of Sta. Cruz, Laguna. They are gathered and interviewed via purposive
sampling also known as subjective sampling. Purposive sampling is when
researchers thoroughly think through how they will establish a sample population
(Tongco, 2007). Researchers went to this community on purpose because they
think that those individuals will fit the profile of the people they need to reach.
Data Gathering Procedure
Researchers conducted the interview through a direct interaction with the
individuals on a one basis as in-person interview in personal interview were used
to explore experiences, views, opinion, or beliefs on specific manner. Accounts
are explored and compared to others, to develop an understanding of the
underlying structures of beliefs. The interview was conducted and recorded in a
quiet, neutral location were the participants was not uncomfortable and
intimidated. The gathered data from the questionnaire were recorded and
tabulated according to the frequencies and corresponding percentages.
Research Instrument
The researchers designed a personal questionnaire as a research
instrument. According to McLeod (2018) a questionnaire is research instrument
consisting of questions for the purpose of gathering information from
respondents. McLeod also stated that questionnaires are like a written interview.
The questionnaire will be a major instrument used in the study so that the
researchers can secure response to certain questions. The questionnaire that
was used was divided into two.
