Plastocrete® 161MR
Water Reducing and Retarding Admixture

Description Plastocrete 161MR is a polymer-type water-reducing and set retarding admix-

ture.
Construction

Plastocrete 161MR meets the requirements of ASTM C-494 Types B and D.

Applications Plastocrete 161MR is recommended for use in all applications where high
quality concrete with superior workability and extended set times is required.
Advantages Plastocrete 161MR water reducing admixture reduces the amount of mixing
water required to produce concrete of a certain slump by acting as a dispers-
ant for the cement particles in the mix.
Plastocrete 161MR is formulated to combine water reduction with a set
retarding agent that retards the initial set time by 20% to 40% depending on
the dosage.
The combined water reducer and retarder benefits concrete in both the plastic
and hardened state:
n Reduced water content required to achieve desired workability and im-
proved finishing characteristics.
n Improved early strength gain and increased ultimate strength, both flexural
and compressive, which allows the use of more economical mixes.
n Initial set is delayed, allowing time for proper finishing and placement
without cold joints during hot weather concreting.
n Uniform and predictable slump life control for hot weather and temperature
control for mass concreting applications.
n Lower water cement ratios provide decreased permeability and increased
durability.
Plastocrete 161MR does not contain calcium chloride or any other intentionally
added chlorides.
How to Use
Dosage Dosage rates of 2-6 fl. oz./100 lbs. (130-390 ml/100 kg) cement are recom-
mended for general concrete applications. Where extended retardation is
required dosage may be increased. Please contact your local Sika Represen-
tative for information and assistance.
Mixing Plastocrete 161MR is added at the concrete plant. Measure required quantity
manually or by automated dispenser. Add into the sand at the weigh hopper
or into the water line at the batch plant.
When used in combination with other admixtures, care must be taken to
dispense each admixture separately into the mix. Do not mix with dry cement.
Combination with other Admixtures: Plastocrete 161MR works effectively
as a single admixture or in combination with other admixtures in the Sika
System.
Packaging Plastocrete 161MR is supplied in 55 gallon (208 liter) drums and bulk delivery.
Construction

Storage and Shelf Life Plastocrete 161MR should be stored at above 35°F (2°C). If frozen, thaw
