“With Honors”
The film is a tale about living life simply. It is a story about a homeless man who
teaches some snobbish Harvard students a thing or about life.
The movie begin with a graduate student named Monty Kessler (Brendan Fraser)
who’s struggling to finish his program and graduate with honors to satisfy his professor,
loses his precious thesis and finds it in the hands of a homeless man named Simon
Wilder (Joe Pesci). Their story began in a wrong place but soon they build student –
mentor relationship with Simon teaching Monty some important life lessons.
On technical view, Joe Pesci brings the best out of this film. The plot is ok
overall. Simon Wilder, keeps it together. He is funny, Heartwarming and good at what
he does. It helped that With Honors had a great soundtrack. It actually nominated in the
Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 1995 for Madonna’s “I’ll remember”. Also
nominated in Grammy Awards1995 as the Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion
Picture or for television. MTV Movie nominee as Best Movie Song and MTV Video
Music Awards as Best Video from a Film.
This is my realizations after watching the movie “You don’t have to be genius in
order for you to understand the world, but sometimes we need to be more philosophical
and logical in life in order for us to see the world in much bigger horizon.”
Maybe it is practically an “unheard of” film. It is simple, maybe even to juvenile
me that not all things should be based on books. The film just strengthened the fact that
not everything in life is taught within the four corners of the classroom. It also
emphasized that experience is still the best teacher and that wisdom can also be
acquired through other people who have gained it themselves.
In the end, Monty does not finish his thesis on time. He argues history with his
professor. He doesn’t even graduate with honors. But the lessons he learned from
Simon will prove to be the most important ones he and his friends will ever learn in life.
