ABOUT THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS (INDIA)
The Institution of Engineers (India) or IEI is the largest multidisciplinary professional body that
encompasses 15 engineering disciplines and gives engineers a global platform for sharing
professional interest. IEI has membership strength of above 0.8 million. Established in 1920,
with its headquarter at 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata-700020, IEI has served the engineering
fraternity close to a century. During this period of time, IEI has been inextricably linked with the
history of modern-day engineering.
In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in India
which has been accorded this honour. Today, its quest for professional excellence has given it a
place of pride in almost every prestigious and relevant organization across the globe. It provides
a vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the Government, Industries,
Academia and the Engineering fraternity, operating through its 124 Centres located across the
country and 6 overseas chapters. Besides, IEI has bilateral agreements with about 31
international bodies and membership of another 8 international bodies of the developed nations
across the globe.
Being recognized as a Scientific and Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of
Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India,
IEI promotes the cause of research and development by providing Grant-in-Aid support to
undergraduate, post graduate students and PhD Research Scholars of Engineering Institutions
and Universities.
IEI conducts Section A & B Examinations in various engineering disciplines (popularly known as
AMIE examination), the successful completion of which is recognized as equivalent to Degree in
appropriate field of Engineering of recognized Universities of India by the Ministry of Human
Resources Development, Government of India. Every year as many as 90000 candidates
appear for these exams.
IEI in collaboration with Springer regularly publishes peer-reviewed international journal in five
series, namely, Series A, Series B, Series C, Series D and Series E covering fifteen engineering
disciplines.
We are pleased to share that Tiruchirapalli Local Centre of The Institution of Engineers (India)
in association with BHEL-Tiruchirapalli and National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirapalli is
organising 34th National Convention of Production Engineers on the theme „Emerging
Technologies in Power Sector Equipment Manufacturing’ during May 25-26, 2019.
India is world's third largest producer and fourth largest consumer of electricity in the world as of
August 2018. In May 2018, India ranked 4thin the Asia Pacific region out of 25 nations on an
index that measures their overall power. Electricity production in India reached 1,201.543 Billion
Units (BU) during FY18.
Renewable energy is fast emerging as a major source of power in India. The Government of
India has set a target to achieve 175 GW installed capacity of renewable energy by FY22. Wind
energy is the largest source of renewable energy in India, accounting for 49.33 per cent of total
installed capacity (69.02 GW). There are plans to double wind power generation capacity to 60
GW by 2022. India has also raised the solar power generation capacity addition target by five
times to 100 GW by 2022. The Union Government of India is preparing a 'rent a roof' policy for
supporting its target of generating 40 Gigawatts (GW) of power through solar rooftop projects by
2022. All the states and union territories of India are on board to fulfil the Government of India's
vision of ensuring 24x7 affordable and quality power for all by March 2019. As of August 2018,
194.2 million households out of 219.2 million households were electrified and the remaining
25.0 million households are expected to be electrified by end March 2019, under the Pradhan
Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana-“Saubhagya” scheme. The Government of India has been
supportive to growth in the power sector. As of September 2018, the Government of India
launched a voluntary based Programme to promote energy efficient chiller systems in India. It
labels the energy performance by providing star ratings and will be effective up to December 31,
2020.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved commercial coal mining for
private sector and the methodology of allocating coal mines via auction and allotment, thereby
prioritizing transparency, ease of doing business and ensuring the use of natural resources for
national development.
The Government of India has released its roadmap to achieve 175 GW capacity in renewable
energy by 2022, which includes 100 GW of solar power and 60 GW of wind power. The Union
Government of India is preparing a 'rent a roof' policy for supporting its target of generating 40
gigawatts (GW) of power through solar rooftop projects by 2022. Further, coal-based power
generation capacity in India, which currently stands at 196.10GW is expected to reach 330-441
GW by 2040.
The 2026 forecast for India's non-hydro renewable energy capacity has been increased to 155
GW from 130 GW on the back of more than expected solar installation rates and successful
wind energy auctions. India could become the world's first country to use LEDs for all lighting
needs by 2019, thereby saving Rs 40,000 crore (US$ 6.23 billion) on an annual basis.
All the states and union territories of India are on board to fulfil the Government of India's vision
of ensuring 24x7 affordable and quality power for all by March 2019, as per the Ministry of
Power and New & Renewable Energy, Government of India.
To meet the increasing demand in the power sector, the stakeholders are expected to introduce
the state of art manufacturing technologies in the shop floors. When the AUSC boilers are
inducted into the thermal power sector, the OEMs have to use nickel based alloys. Similarly, the
hydel and solar energy sectors also processing advanced materials and technologies.
The Convention aims to provide a platform so that the experts, technocrats, the OEMS, the user
industries and academicians will meet together and exchange the latest developments in the
field so that the emerging technologies will be implemented and results in enhanced productivity
and quality.
Engineering Professionals from different industries, Academic Institutions, R&D Organisations,
Government Departments and Entrepreneurs are hereby invited to submit their manuscript in
line with the following three Themes and Sub theme embraces the Theme of the National
Seminar.
