Msce510 PS 4 2020 PDF

A retaining wall 6 meters high with a backfill inclined at 15 degrees and uniform weight of 16 kN/cu m is proposed. The wall is inclined 5 degrees from vertical. Using Coulomb's active earth pressure coefficient with an internal friction angle of 30 degrees, lateral force Pae is to be determined for the inclined backfill case and then recalculated assuming a horizontal backfill, keeping all other conditions the same. The position z of Pae above the base is also to be located.

MSCE 510

Earthquake Engineering
Problem Set No. 4

1. Determine the lateral force Pae for a proposed retaining wall 6 m high whose back fill is inclined at 15° and
whose uniform weight is 16 KN/cu m. The back of wall is inclined 5° w.r.t. the vertical. Consider δ = 15°, k v =
0 and kh = 0.10. Locate the position, z, of Pae above the base. Use Coulomb’s active earth pressure coefficient
to determine Pa. Refer to the formulas in lesson Module 8. [Additional data: angle of internal friction ∅ =
30°]

2. Redo #1 for a horizontal backfill, all other conditions remain.
