Common mistakes

*No subject after relative pronouns e.g. the girl who went to the party

The girl who she went to the party

*Due to/because of + noun e.g. We couldn’t study due to the poor condition of the library

*Due to/because of the fact that + normal sentence e.g. the education system has gotten worse
due to the fact that the government is not investing enough money in it.

*reported speech always goes in the past (remember past simple- past perfect, pero cuando
hablas de un hábito, puedes usar past simple otra vez e.g.

-my brother said that he had studied 5 subjects for A level

-my mum told me that when she was younger, she loved Marilyn Monroe

*3rd person singular changes!!!!

*when you don’t know the gender, use 3rd person plural e.g. the student complained that they
couldn’t find a job because he lacked practical experience

*todo el mundo= everyone/everybody

*todo el tiempo= all the time

Some useful sentences for each subject area

EDUCATION

*the standards of education have been getting worse (empeorando) over the past decade

*my mum told me that in her day, people had used to study harder

*it used to be easier to find a job, now it is much more difficult due to the economic situation

*On one hand, students are more qualified after university than before, but on the other hand
they have less practical experience

*Everyone should study at least one foreign language in school, it gives children a great
advantage in later life

*Home schooling ought to be considered by more people because of the many advantages
*If the government had invested more money in education, the quality of education would be
much better

*Due to the government investing money in other things, education has been suffering

*If students learnt practical skills like cooking and typing, they would be better prepared for
like after university.
