Calculation For SHORT CIRCUIT For 25KA

This document provides a formula and parameters to calculate the thermal withstand capability of busbars due to short circuit current. It then works through an example calculation to determine the required cross-sectional area of a busbar to withstand a 25kA fault current for 1 second. The calculation determines the required area is 315.13 sq mm. The provided busbar, with a cross-sectional area of 600 sq mm, is more than adequate to withstand the short circuit conditions.

CALCULATION FOR THERMAL WITHSTAND CAPABILITY OF BUSBARS DUE TO SHORT CIRCUIT

CURRENT

The reference formulas and various parameters taken from K.C Aggarwal Handbook

Θt = k/100(Isc/A)Sq . (1+ α20 Θ).t

Where

θt= Temperature rise (i n ˚C)

Isc =Syminetrical fault current r.m.s. (in Amps)

A = cross-sectional area of the conductor (in mm')

α20 = Temperature coefficient of resistance at 20˚C/ ˚C. which as in Table 30.1 is

0.00403 for pure aluminium and 0.00363 for aluminium alloys and 0.00393 for pure copper
θ = Operating temperature of the conductor at which the fault occurs ((i n ˚C)

K = 1.166 for aluminium and 0.52 for copper.

t = Duration of fault (1sec)

Calculation of Bus Bar cross section area for 25 KA fault current for 1sec.

θt= 100 ˚C

Isc = 25 KA

θ = 90 ˚C (45˚C Ambient + 45˚C rise)

(i.e) operating temperature at 90˚C and fault Temp is 190˚C

t= 1sec

On putting these value in above formula

Cross section area = 315.13 sq mm

Busbar Provided = 1 nos. of (50x12) AL. = 600 mm2

Hence bus bar chosen for short time thermal withstand capability is more than adequate.
