Recovery Boiler Sootblowing

System Audit

Technical Description

1
1 - INTRODUCTION

The main goal of the sootblower application is to combine the sootblower cleaning
potential with the difficulty of removing the deposits. Over-cleaning results in wasted
energy and possible erosion of the boiler tubes. On the other hand, insufficient cleaning
can cause inefficient operation of the boiler leading to the boiler shutdowns.

In order to achieve the Boiler Thermal Efficiency levels defined in the project, under the
analysis of cleaning efficiency, it is crucial that the cleaning equipment, in the case of
the Sootblower, are suitable for the application.

2 – SOOTBLOWING AUDIT

A detailed analysis during the project / process phase is essential to eliminate the
problems that directly affect the cleaning efficiency and availability of the sootblowers
and thereby reduce the operating costs of the sootblowing system.

The Audit includes the following phases:

a) Detailed analysis of the drawings (Steam Pipes; Condensate System; Air Pipes;
Sootblowers)

b) Sootblowers inspection in operation or inspection / tests at the manufacturer

(during project)

c) Inspection of the pipes (steam, condensate and air) and the sootblowers in the
rest position or monitoring the pipes installation and sootblowers (during
assembly)

d) Commissioning and testing of the Steam Lines; Condensed; Air; Blowers (during
start-up)

e) Final Report.

The Main Project Criteria to be observed are:

 Boiler model
 Sootblower model
 Fuel type
 Energy Cleaning required

2
 Gas temperature profile
 Internal pressure in the boiler regions
 Steam blowing conditions (temperature and pressure)
 Blowing steam consumption
 Cleaning Radius
 Sootblowers Location
 Steam Pipes Tree
 Condensate drainage system
 Sealing air system
 Sootblowing sequence
 Sootblowing frequency
 Sootblower components materials
 Ease of maintenance
 New technologies available to increase blowing efficiency and availability

3 – EXPECTED RESULT

 Boiler Cleaning Operating Cost Reduction:

 Increasing the sootblower cleaning efficiency
 Increasing the sootblower availability
 New tecnology implementation

 Steam Consumption Reduction

 Definition of the best blowing pressure per boiler region
 Definition of the operational steam parameters (pressure and temperature)
 High performance nozzles application
 Improved condensate removal system

 Sootblower Maintenance Cost Reduction

 Sootblower maintenance procedures
 Sootblowers maintenance tooling
 Peventive Maintenance Plan implementation
 Sootblowers component materials certification

 Final
 Boiler campaign increase
