Self-Leadership
Self-leadership is having a developed sense of who you are, what you can do, where you are
going coupled with the ability the influence your communication, emotions and behaviors on the
way to getting there. At the center of leadership is the person who, more than anything else
makes the difference. Although the vast majority of leadership theories lie outside of the realm of
self-leadership, there are several noted individuals who have studied various aspects of self-
leadership. exceptional leaders distinguish themselves because of superior self-leadership. Self-
leadership serves to enhance a leader’s emotional intellect by strengthening one’s awareness of
self.

Leadership competencies important in an organization:

1. Conflict Management
 Practice active listening and communication skills. Practice listening to what the
other person has to say, without interrupting. ...
 Stay calm and recognize the conflict. ...
 Maintain a positive attitude and practice managing your emotions
2. Problem Solving & Decision Making
 Identify the problem. To solve a problem, you must first determine what the
problem actually is
 Search for alternatives. It may seem obvious what you must do to address the
problem
 Weigh the alternatives
 Make a choice
 Implement the decision
 Evaluate the outcome
3. Creativity & Innovation
 Create your own “Three Ifs”
(1) What would happen if I change it (the object/ system/ social
relationship, etc)?
(2) What would I change or improve about this object if I wanted to use it
in 10 years?
(3) What would I do if I had a one-million-dollar investment to improve
it?
 Make time for cohesive creative thinking
allocate time – it might be an hour per day or per week – in which to exercise
creative thinking about something specific
 Learn to pitch your ideas (in an elevator)
There is an old saying, “If you cannot express your idea in three sentences –
you don’t have an idea!” One of the most important innovation skills is the
ability to present a very short and clear description of a new idea (two to three
sentences – like shouting through the closing door of an elevator) and to make
a short presentation
 Bounce ideas off others
All the great ideas were created by teams of people who stayed together to
conceive the idea, plan their innovative projects, take them to investors and the
public, and most importantly jointly brainstorm those innovations within the team
4. Interpersonal Skills
 Cultivate a positive outlook: Teach oneself to be positive by reminding every
day of the good things about life and job. If you’re upset about a personal matter,
set those feelings aside until after work. If you’re stressed about a work issue,
look for the positive in the situation and try to build on that.

 Control your emotions: Work isn’t the place to be overly emotional. Whether
you are extremely irritated, severely depressed or ecstatically happy, take a deep
breath and tone your emotions down. Always express yourself in a calm, patient
manner.

 Acknowledge others’ expertise: One of the best ways to build trust at work is to
let your co-workers know you appreciate their expertise. Ask for their help on
projects and give credit where credit is due.

 Show a real interest in your colleagues: You work side-by-side with your
colleagues for eight hours every day; it’s only logical that you’ll learn something
about their lives. Make a point of getting to know what’s important to your co-
workers. It will help solidify your relationships with them.

 Find one good trait in every co-worker: Not all of us like every single person
we work with but you can’t let personal preference get in the way of peak
performance. If a colleague’s personality clashes completely with your own, the
best way to handle the situation is by finding at least one good trait in that person
—preferably something professional.

 Practice active listening: One can do this by maintaining eye contact with the
speaker, nodding head, and repeating what other person says in own words. The
speaker will feel respected and you’re likely to be able to recall the conversation
more easily afterwards.

 Be assertive: Be confident in your ability and opinions, and don’t be afraid to

express your needs, as well as your limits.

 Practice empathy: Gain a well-rounded view of things by putting yourself in

other people’s shoes. This will help you develop empathy for others, which in
turn goes a long way in finding solutions that work for all involved.
 Maintain your relationships: Connect with college friends and former
colleagues on social media or through email; try to set up face-to-face meetings
now and then. This shows your connections that you still value the relationship—
and that can go a long way in helping you advance your career
5. Time Management
 Delegate Tasks
 Prioritize Work
 Schedule Tasks
 Set up Deadlines
 Overcome Procrastination
 Deal with Stress Wisely
 Avoid Multitasking
 Start Early
 Take Regular Breaks
 Learn to say no
6. Emotional Intelligence & Self Awareness
 Get out of the comfort zone- Instead of shoving the emotion away, you should
guide yourself to it and through it. Ignoring feelings would only allow them to
appear when least expected
 Identify your triggers- Identifying your trigger leads to improved emotional
intelligence, because it would allow you to develop the ability to control the
outcome. It could give you the skill to calm down, take control of your actions
and maintain your presence of spirit
 Do not judge your feelings- If you allow yourself to regard the emotion just as
what it is, you can understand it and find out what your mind is trying to tell you.
When you allow yourself not to judge emotions, they will run its course and
vanish and they will not take control of you
 Don’t make decisions in a bad mood - Emotional intelligence through self-
awareness teaches that you take notice of the situation and accept is it is. You
should be OK that you probably can do little to change the current conditions and
just let it pass
 Don’t make decisions in a good mood either- When you are feeling really,
really happy, ecstatic even, it is very easy to do something that you would regret
 Get to the birds-eye view - develop an understanding of your own behavior. You
should be aware of your emotions and thoughts as the situations comes to life.
You should try to inject yourself between the trigger and the reaction in order to
allow yourself to process the whole information and to look at things from above
 Look for your emotions in the media - When a movie moves you, this says
something about you. If you take a closer look at the situation and the actions of
the characters, you might learn something about you
 Revisit your values and act accordingly
 Check yourself (especially under stress)- Self-awareness is mostly internal
process, but there are external implications of your internal situation. Get into the
habit of examining these regularly in order to make sure that everything is OK
 Fill the blind spot with feedback- Your own view of yourself can never be
impartial, but the others may see what you truly are. Do not be afraid to look
outside for help. Get your partner to a comfortable location and ask him or her for
feedback
7. Striving for Excellence
Step 1: Self Evaluation
Knowing your strengths, weakness, thoughts and emotions, life principles and
beliefs are key to personal excellence and self-evaluation play key role in

others play important role in helping you understand your progress, and your
performance. Evaluate yourself how you are performing. Are you able to put your
action plan into action or not, and how effectively are doing and where you are

1. Set goals for your life: Set daily, monthly and long-term goals tied to your visions and
dreams. Once the goals are set, ask yourself daily what is being done to reach them.
2. Be fearless: Too many people coast through life without ever taking the initiative to find
greatness within themselves. One must take initiative and teach oneself to be daring, bold and
brave. Be willing to fall, fail and get up again for another round.
3. Honor others: But being the leader of your own life means learning to be humble and give
away the credit. Instead of seeking recognition for oneself, show your support to others, and
recognize and appreciate them.
4. Embrace new ideas and opportunities: Do not shy away from anything new, whether it is
an opportunity, an idea, or an experience. Turn every day into an adventure and work to turn all
the programs, projects and processes into possibilities.
5. Question everything: Become the person who is constantly asking questions. The more you
question, the more you learn, and the more you learn, the more you know. Ask yourself
questions to stay focused--simple questions to clarify issues and facts, and complex questions for
deeper insights into concepts and beliefs. Curiosity is an important way to become a self-leader.
6. Do what is right, not what is easy: When it comes to integrity, honesty and ethics there is no
room for compromise. Make sure that what you say and what you do are always in alignment;
keep integrity at the heart of your character and you will never lose sight of it.
7. Find goodness and beauty in everyone and everything: It is easy to become overwhelmed
by the negativity and ugliness that exist in the world. But if we spend our time seeking out
beauty in everything and in everyone, life becomes different.
8. Actively reject pessimism: There will always be something to be negative about. Instead,
practice zero tolerance for negativity. The more one rejects things that are defeatist, critical,
fatalistic and apathetic, the more room there is for positivity.
9. Be the change you want to see in the world: Everything one wants starts within. Dream big
and start small.
10. Surround yourself with mentors and teachers: Always be on the lookout for teachers and
mentors who are smarter and more experienced. Seek to be continually inspired by something
and learning about everything. Encouraging growth and development is as important to lead own
life.
11. Care for and about people: Make sure that compassion and empathy are a central part of
who you are, and you will stay connected to your basic humanity
