(ASHOK 33 INTERPLANT STANDARD — STEEL INDUSTRY SPECIFICATION FOR IPSS : 1-01-005-86 } S GEAR TYPE FLEXIBLE COUPLINGS CORRESPONDING INDIAN STANDARD DOES NOT EXIST 0. Foreword 0.4 Interplant standardizetion in steel industry is being pursued under the aegis of the Indian Standards Institution (1S!) and the Stee! Authority of India Limited (SAIL). This Interptant Standard, prepared by the Standards Committee on Mechanical Drives, IPSS 1: 1 with the active participation of the representatives of all the steel plantsand established manufacturers of gear type flexible couplings was adopted by the Approval Committee on Consumable Stores and General Equipment, IPSS 1 on 21 March 1986. 0.2 Interplant Standards for steel industry primarily aim at achieving rationalization and unification of parts and sub-assemblies used in steel plant equipment and accessories, and provide guidance in indenting stores or equipment for existing or new installations by Individual steel plants. For exercising effective control on the inventories, it is desirable to select a fewer number of sizes (or types ) from among those mentioned in this standard for the purpose of company standards of individual steel plants. It is not advisable to make deviations in the technical requirements. 1. Scope — This Interplant Standard covers requirements of gear type flexible couplings including floating shaft couplings used for connecting two shaft ends for torque transmission. 2. Classification — The couplings specified in this standard cover the following types: 2) Type GCA — Geer type flexible coupling A type having internat sealing arrangement ( see Fig. 1), b) Type GCB_— Gear type flexible coupling B type having detachable sealing arrangement (see Fig. 2), and c) Type GCFA — Floating shat flexible coupling to be used with one half of coupling type A (see Fig. 3). 3, Rating and Dimensions — The rating, dimensions and other requirements of the couplings shall be as given in Table 1 read with Fig. 1 for type A and Table 2 read with Fig. 2 for type B coup- Tings and Table 3 and Table 4 with Fig. 3 for floating shait couplings. 4, Materials and Construction — The half casing and toothed hubs shall be made of steel conforming to C45 of IS : 1570-1961 ‘Schedules for wrought steels for general engineering purposes" and shail be heat treated to a hardness HB 241-280, 4.4 The ha!f casing shall be interchangeable. Alternatively, steel castings, of equivalent properties [see IS : 2707-1973 Carbon steel castings for surface hardening ( first revision )] may also be used for the manufacture of couplings, provided it is specifically agreed to between the supplier and the user. 4.2 The bolts shall be made of steo! C45. IS : 1570-1961 in normalized condition and nuts shall conform to property class 4 of IS : 1367-1967. 4.3 The gear teeth shall be cut by ..odule cutters only. The teeth characteristics including crown ing and barraling shall be as agreed to between the supplier and the user. 5. Sealing — The sealing arrangement for the couplings shall be either integral with the casing or with an adapter plate as shown in Fig. 4 ( Fig. 4 will be added later on ) 5.1 Arrangement of sealing, such as with felt conforming to IS : 1719-1969 “Specification for felt woollen ( first revision )'. °O' rings, lip seals, etc, shall be optional subject to agreement between the supplier and the user. Lubrication — Provision shall be made for easy filling and discharge of the lubricant with |” plug (*; ) suitably located. 6.1 For applications where ambient temperature is below 65°S°C, mineral oil having a viscosity no lighter than 150 SU ( 321CS) and be not heavier than 1 000 SSU ( 220 CS ) af 99°C shall be used. 6.2 Alternatively, calcium base EP type grease consistency No. 2 or grpahite grease of consistency No. 2 as per IS : 508-1984 ' Specification for grease, graphited ( third revision )' and with graphite content 10 to 20 percent shall be used. Marking —The coupling shall be marked with the following details on the periphery of the casing: a) Manufacturer's natire or trade-mark; b) Type and coupling number as specified in col 1 of Tables 1, 2 and 3; and ) Designation of this standard. “& Packing — The coupling shall be suitably packed in wooden boxes to prevent damage during ransi 9. Guarantee — The couplings shall be guaranteed for a_minimum period of 18 months from the date of cespatch or 12 months from the date of commissioning whichever is earlier.
