Procrastination Is The Thief of Time

Procrastination causes people to delay tasks and waste time, inhibiting progress. It affects everyone to some degree, causing stress. While schedules may not help procrastinators who know what they should do but can't, procrastination truly does steal time by making people work under pressure and potentially miss opportunities that may never come again. Procrastination reinforces the habit of avoiding disliked tasks and can lead to negative consequences as delays compound over time.

‘Procrastination is the thief of time’. To what extent is this statement true? Discuss.

You should
write at least 350 words.

Procrastination is a complex psychological behaviour that affects everyone to some extent. For
some, it is a minor problem, but for others it can be a source of considerable stress and anxiety.
Perils of procrastination are there for everyone. Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task
which needs to be accomplished and is only remotely related to time management. Very detailed
schedules usually are of no help, as procrastinators often know exactly what they should be doing,
even if they cannot do it. The adage ‘procrastination is the thief of time’ should ring a bell for
everyone. It is indeed effective and truthful in real life. Time is an essential aspect of life for every
human being. We have all been allotted a certain amount of time and it is up to us to use it wisely.
We all procrastinate about different things, but eventually time does just run out for all of us.
Procrastination is the thief of time because it causes delays and it inhibits our progress.

Time once lost, is lost forever. We cannot turn back the clock. Unfortunately, the procrastinator is
often remarkably optimistic about his ability to complete a task on a tight deadline. This is usually
accompanied by expressions of reassurance that everything is under control. Lulled by a false sense
of security, time passes. Only when he realises that he is running out of time, he panics. He will still
get things done, but under very stressful conditions. He has no choice, but to slog day and night to
complete the task. Progress is being made, but he has lost his freedom. Moreover, it may have
affected his health as he has to work under pressure. If he falls sick, valuable time is lost. He may
have to forgo an opportunity and opportunity seldom knocks twice. If unfortunate, he will never get
same opportunities again. If he is lucky, he may attain better chances in life, but the same
opportunity at that particular moment will be lost forever.

Procrastination causes delays because we are not punctual or we postpone doing things. By
procrastinating, we are rescheduling the things in our lives. Such delays may lead to other negative
consequences and we may not have the time to reverse the situation. The danger in procrastination
is reinforcing- every time you delay it, it reinforces your negative attitude toward that task. Every
time you put off something you dislike, you strengthen the habit of not doing. Life offers many
opportunities and we must seize them before they disappear into the midst of lost opportunities. As
time elapses, we miss many things in life. Time is money, and the more we procrastinate, the more
time we need to accomplish things. We lose out in terms of dollars and cents. At the workplace, for
example, an employee who is punctual and does not procrastinate is more like to be promoted over
one who does.
