Highway Geometric Design
(IBMCETE804)
Time: Three Hours

Note: Attempt any five questions. All question carry equal marks.
1 (a) Describe the objectives and requirements of
highway geometric design.
(b) Explain the following factors which are considered
in the geometric design of highways.
(i) Design speed; (ii) Topography; (iii) Design
hourly volume and capacity and (iv) vehicular and
human characteristics of road users.
2 (a) Derive the formula used to calculate the stopping
distance (SD) of a vehicle.
(b) The design speed of a highway is 80 Kmph. There
is a horizontal curve of radius 200 m on a certain
locality. Calculate the superelevation needed to
maintain the design speed of 80 Kmph, if maximum
superelevation of 0.07 is not to be exceeded. Also
calculate the maximum allowable speed on this
horizontal curve as it is not possible to increase the
radius. Take safe limit of transverse coefficient of
friction as 0.15. Assume any other data if required.
3 (a) Explain about the followings highway cross section
elements. (i) Friction (ii) Pavement unevenness and
(iii) Light reflecting characteristics.
(b) Define Camber in highways. Describe the various
shapes of camber with the help of diagrams and
their suitability. Also give the recommended values
of camber as per IRC for different type of road
surfaces.
4 (a) Describe about grade separated intersections. Write
any six advantages of grade separated intersections.
(b) Calculate the length of transition curve and shift for
a two lane SH having width of carriageway
including widening as 7.5 m and for a design speed
of 65 Kmph. The radius of circular curve is 220 m
and allowable rate of introduction of superelevation
(pavement is rotated about centre line) is 1 in 150.
Assume any other data if required.
5 (a) Describe the basic requirements of intersection at
grade. Also explain unchannelized intersections and
channelized intersections.
(b) Define rotary intersection. Write any five
advantages and any five disadvantages of traffic
rotary.
6 (a) Describe about on street or kerb parking. Also
explain the various patterns of kerb parking with the
help of neat sketches.
(b) Describe the traffic and parking problems in urban
areas. Explain the various ill effects of parking with
reference the congestion, accidents, obstruction to
fire fighting operation and environment.

Highway Construction (IBMCETE803)

1 (a) Enlist and state functions of various road making
machineries.
(b) Enumerate various tests and their frequency to be
conducted while executing earthwork in
embankment and compaction of earthwork as per
MORT and H “Specifications for road and bridge
works”.
2 (a) Find out material required for WBM construction of
a rural road (width 3.50m) 900 m in length having
250mm crust using G1, G2 and G3 layers.
(b) Write importance of granular sub base. Discuss
about the requirements, construction procedure and
testing to be done for GSB.
3 (a) Explain difference between tack coat and prime coat
based on purpose and construction procedure?
(b) Write construction procedure of WBM roads. Enlist
material requirements and specifications.
4 (a) What is overlay? Why overlays are constructed?
Explain various types of overlays.
(b) The bulk specific gravities of coarse aggregate, fine
aggregate and fines are found to be 2.50, 2.60 and
2.65 respectively. Specific gravity of bitumen is
given 1.10. Relative propositions for Marshall
sample are 55, 30, 10 and 5% by weight
respectively. Mass of sample mould in air is
1245.2g, mass of paraffin coated sample in air is
1295.8g and mass of paraffin coated sample in
water is 703.7g. Calculate bulk specific gravity of
mix, VMA, VA and VFB. Specific gravity of
paraffin is 0.9 and theoretical specific gravity of
mix obtained from vacuum test is 2.441.
5 (a) Write down for design of concrete pavements as per
IRC: 58 – 1988.
(b) Explain various types of joints used in concrete
pavements with neat sketches.
6 (a) What are the functions of highway drainage?
Explain road drainage construction in urban roads
with sketches.
(b) Explain the principle, scope and factors effecting
the properties of soil lime stabilization.
7 (a) What are different types of slope failure? Derive an
expression for the factor of safety of an infinite
slope in cohesion less soil.
(b) A long natural slope in an over consolidated clay
(C’ = 10 kN/m2, Ф= 250, Ysat = 20 kN/m3) is
inclined at 100 to the horizontal. The water table is
at the surface and the seepage is parallel to slope. If
plane slip has developed at a depth of 5m below the
surface, determine the factor of safety. Take y w =
10kN/m3.
