School Artifacts
The first school artifact I reviewed was Waynesboro Public School’s Teacher
Performance Plan. This plan was revised to comply with the guidelines written by the Virginia
incorporates the seven performance standards through the Virginia Department of Education.
The seven performance standards refer to the expectation for the teacher’s professional
There are four developmental levels given to the teacher for each of the seven
standards. The ratings include unacceptable, needs improvement, proficient, and exemplary.
These developmental levels are given to give an overall picture of teacher performance. The
rubric used for these observations include specific observable teacher and student behavior
There is a timeline in place for specific evaluation plans. Teachers will have classroom
observations, goal setting for student progress, student pre/post tests, and 21 st century skill
assessment annually. Teachers are also required to provide evidence of meeting annual goals
by collecting this information throughout the year. First-Year teachers will have two classroom
Teachers are also required to demonstrate student growth in the following areas:
Content Driven Data, Student Achievement Goals, and 21st Century Skills. To document content
driven data, teachers will give students a pre and post test. This data will allow administrators
to ensure alignment with SOL pass rates and student growth data (WPS, 2016, pg 8).

In my opinion, teacher evaluation is a crucial part of being a teacher. Having feedback
from an administrator on areas of strengths and weaknesses can be helpful when starting out
as a teacher. A school is successful based on how well the teachers within that school teach.
These performance evaluations allow teachers to set goals for themselves. One thing I liked
about this performance plan was their inclusion of SMART goals. Personally, I am a very goal-
oriented person. I do a better job of reaching my goals if they are set out in front of me. These
SMART goals allow teachers to make goals not only for themselves, but for their students as
well.
Professional Knowledge. This standard states that the teachers demonstrates an understanding
of the curriculum, subject content, and the developmental needs of students by providing
relevant learning experiences (Virginia Department of Education, 2015, pg 10). I think this
is what teaching evaluations are all about. A good educator has knowledge of the curriculum
The second school artifact I reviewed is the school improvement plan for Heritage High
School. They want to achieve Division-wide Indicators of Excellence. They want their students
written out explains how to achieve each goal and what the achievement of the goal looks like.
To implement these plans this school needs to have a well-trained teaching staff and have their
teachers focus on meeting these goals. I think allowing more funding for better professional

development could attribute to meeting these goals as well. In order to have a successful
school, the teachers need to be prepared to guide their students into success.
