Introduction to Essential Oils
The statements in this book have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. This book is
written from my own personal experiences and includes a brief overview of essential oils
including how to use them and some useful essential oil recipes. I schedule one-on-one
appointments to delve further into these topics. To set up a one-on-one appointment, please
email me at [email protected]. Okay, now that we have all of that out of the way,
let’s dig into the fun stuff.
History
Essential oils have been around for thousands of years. Most people can recall hearing the
story of three precious gifts brought to baby Jesus, including frankincense and myrrh. Up
until about 10 years ago, people using essential oils were often thought of as ‘hippies’ or ‘tree
huggers’ and the use of essential oils was not mainstream. As society has been searching for
more natural solutions to everyday concerns, essential oils have grown in popularity both
with people using them as well as researchers studying them. doTERRA is the leader in
current research with essential oils. The first significant study using doTERRA essential oils
was published by John Hopkins University and since then more and more peer-reviewed
studies have been released.
Safety
According to the latest research, there is little to no risk when using essential oils
appropriately, which is why a lot of people are turning to them for their everyday concerns.
While uncommon, some people may have skin reactions to certain oils when applying
topically. This is caused by an allergy to the actual plant or more commonly by not using the
proper dilution with a carrier oil for certain essential oils. A carrier oil helps reduce the
strength of the essential oil making it easier on sensitive or young skin. My favorite carrier
oil is fractionated coconut oil which stays in liquid form at room temperature and easily
mixes well with all essential oils. Essential oils should always be used in moderation with
frequency being more important than quantity. When using an essential oil, apply one or
two drops with the proper dilution using a carrier oil. If you aren’t getting the desired result
after 15 minutes, apply again. Women who are pregnant and others under medical
supervision should check with their medical provider before using essential oils. Essential
oils should always be properly diluted when applying on babies and young children. Not
every essential oil can be used on babies and young children so please research the specific
oil and the dilution requirements before applying. Many people use rollerball blends since
the recipes call for carrier oils. Some of my favorite rollerball recipes will be shared in
Chapter 2. Also, essential oils should never be used in the eyes or ear canal and use caution
when applying the oils whenever the pores of the skin are especially open such as after a
warm shower or sweating. If an oil gets too strong after application or needs to be removed,
a carrier oil or cooking oil such as olive or canola oil should be used instead of warm water
since the warm water will open the pores causing the oil to go deeper in the skin.
Quality
Because essential oils are not regulated by the FDA it is important to know that they all
aren’t created equally. A quality essential oil must be harvested the right way in its optimal
growing climate to yield a better chemical composition. As someone who lives in the
Heartland of the country, I often compare this to eating a tomato. I personally hate eating
most tomatoes because they just don’t taste good. For two months out of the year, however,
I can’t get enough of the ones grown from my garden. That’s because they are fresh and are
allowed to ripen to perfection without pesticides or being picked too early before the fruit
matures. They taste different because their chemical make-up is different. Plants harvested
for essential oils need ideal growing locations and for the best results, be raised in places that
optimize their growing requirements or where they grow indigenously. A pineapple grown in
Illinois will definitely taste different than a pineapple grown in Hawaii.
doTERRA goes to great lengths to ensure its essential oils meet high quality standards and
are free from pesticides, fillers and other contaminants. doTERRA utilizes third-party
randomized testing throughout the whole process and the results are available to the public.
A code on each bottle allows the user to see what testing was conducted on that specific
bottle and the source of the oil in the bottle. There aren’t many other companies going
through this arduous process or being as transparent. This is why I trust and only use
doTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) essential oils.
Chapter 1
Aromatic
The first and one of the easiest ways to use essential oils is aromatically. Using oils
aromatically is great for mood management, to clean and purify the air as well as support
healthy breathing. One of my favorite things to do in the morning to help wake me up is to
put a drop of peppermint in the palm of my hands, cup my hands in front of my nose and
inhale. It is an easy way to experience the oils and can be done almost anywhere as long as
the oil does not need to be diluted when used topically, which is discussed later. The next
way to use the oils aromatically is using a diffuser specifically made for therapeutic essential
oils. A diffuser is different from common humidifiers and air purifiers which may not have
the correct grade of plastic to be used with the oils and may add heat in order to produce the
vapor. Just like the quality of all essential oils is different, some diffusers are better than
others when using essential oils. There are two main types of essential oil diffusers. One
type disperses a mist of the actual oil either by pouring drops of the oil in the diffuser or
attaching the oil bottle directly on the diffuser. The second type uses water with the oil to
create the mist. Since oil and water don’t mix, the diffuser gently shakes the oil and water to
diffuse in the air.
After using multiple diffusers of both types on the market made by different manufacturers,
doTERRA’s Petal Diffuser is my favorite and one of the highest quality and longest lasting
diffusers I have ever used. I own four Petal Diffusers and use them everyday in different
rooms of my house and office.
I diffuse different oils throughout the day depending on my schedule and every night when I
go to bed. I notice a huge difference on the mornings I forgot to diffuse the night before. I
also travel with a diffuser as it can quickly turn any hotel room into a sweet smelling spa. It
is also great for immune support when sharing space with other people.
Chapter 3 of this book will provide some of my favorite diffuser recipes using a water and oil
type diffuser. You’ll note that most recipes call for a few drops of a few different oils. If you
plan on using just one oil, I recommend using 6 to 8 drops of the single oil in the diffuser.
Topical
Topical application is a great way to experience essential oils and follows two basic
principles. The first principle is when there is a concern about a specific area of the body;
the oil should be applied directly on the skin of that area. For example, someone
experiencing lower back discomfort should apply the oil directly on the lower back. The
second principle is when the concern includes the whole body such as mood management;
the oils should be applied in places that will help the oil get delivered to the rest of the body.
I typically apply the oils to the bottoms of my feet or behind my ears. Essential oils can also
be applied to pressure points and I often put some over my heart as you can also experience
the oil aromatically.
Before applying any essential oil, please read the basic safety tips discussed earlier and check
the specific oil bottle or doTERRA catalog to ensure the oil can be used topically and if it
needs to be diluted. When in doubt, dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil such as
fractionated coconut oil. Using a rollerball to apply the oil topically is quick, easy, and keeps
the hands from coming into contact with the oil which lowers the risk of getting the oil in the
eyes.
Chapter 2 will provide some of my favorite rollerball recipes that detail how much essential
oils to add along with the right amount of carrier oil to ensure the blend is properly diluted.
Internal
Some essential oils can be taken internally either directly on the tongue, dropped into a
drink or swallowed in a veggie capsule. Before taking any oil internally, look at the bottle or
doTERRA catalog to verify the oil can be taken internally. Because the potency level and
taste of essential oils, dropping them on the tongue can be fairly intense for some, but may
be necessary if the concern involves the mouth or throat. When my throat is irritated, I put a
drop of Melaleuca on my tongue and swallow. The taste is not the greatest, but to me it is
better than an irritated throat. If an oil is supposed to be diluted before applying it topically,
it should not be taken in the mouth at full strength.
Another way to take the oils internally is by adding them to a drink such as water. When
using the oils in drinks, it is important to make sure a glass container is used since some
essential oils can break down certain plastics that should not be ingested. I love adding a few
drops of lemon to my water and drinking it throughout the day. Be sure to shake the water
bottle each time before drinking to mix the oil and water, or if using an open glass, add the
oil to the glass before the water so it will mix better. Use caution adding the oils that require
dilution topically to drinks. Depending on the amount of dilution required, it may be better
to add the oil to a gel capsule and swallow the oil instead of drinking it.
The last way to take essential oils internally is in veggie capsules. doTERRA has some oil
blends available in soft gels as well as empty gel capsules. The empty gel capsules can be
pulled apart in order to add the desired oils and then put back together and swallowed. I
love using the empty gel capsules if there isn’t a soft gel already available from doTERRA,
because I can add or subtract the number of drops used based on how I’m feeling that
particular day and don’t have to worry about adding all the drops to a drink.
Whichever way you choose to use essential oils, know that the outcome is often the same.
We want the essential oils into our bodies so they can go to work. In this book I won’t be
offering any internal usage recipes.
Chapter 2
Rollerball
Just Roll With It
This chapter is devoted to applying essential oils using a rollerball. The usage is topical and
can help a specific area of concern or overall mood management.
Rollerball Basics
Rollerballs come with a glass vial, a cap and the actual roller part. Rollerballs come in
various sizes, colors and shapes. Because essential oils can be affected by direct sunlight,
rollerballs should be dark in color if possible. I also recommend a steel rollerball as it lasts
longer and applies more evenly. I personally use 10 ml rollerballs and after adding the
desired essential oil will fill the remaining bottle with fractionated coconut oil. For the
recipes listed in this section, I’m recommending doing this. Feel free to adapt the recipe and
make adjustments to get the desired outcome.

This chapter is devoted to using essential oils in a diffuser. This aromatic usage is used to
cleanse and purify the air, affect mood and can support healthy breathing.
Diffuser Basics
I covered a lot of the basics of using a diffuser in Chapter 1. Please remember to put the
water into the diffuser first and then add the desired drops of essential oils. doTERRA has a
full line of mood oils as well, which are already pre-blended. I referenced a few in the
rollerball recipes, and they are great for diffusing individually. These include Balance, Cheer,
Console, Forgive, Passion, Peace, Motivate and Serenity.

Sprays
Spray Away
As the popularity of essential oils has grown, so has the way they are being used. Many
people are not only using essential oils for therapeutic reasons, but now for cleaning, cooking
and even just for the overall smell factor. Thus, the DIY ideas for using them continues to
rapidly expand.
Sprays Basics
As with all of our previous discussions, make sure that any spray you create is stored in a
glass bottle. You can find a variety of glass bottles from 1-12 ounces, and I honestly love each
of them for different reasons. A 1 oz. spray bottle is nice if I have a scratchy throat, while a 12
oz. bottle is my go to for cleaning the kitchen or bathroom. Most of the recipes below will
require a few other products besides the essential oil. Since the oils often don’t fully mix
with other products, it is important that you shake it up before each use. Most of these other
ingredients can be found on Amazon or at a local health food store. As before, you may need
to adapt the recipe to get the desired effect. This is the fun section for using the oils.
