LITERARY CRITICISM

I.“The Martyr”

 Is the title appropriate for the texts?


 Yes, because it is about the love of someone to another and make you believe or hope
that love would last forever or Destiny does exist. The love of the martyr gives all of
his/her everything just to make his/her love happy and wouldn’t think twice about
sacrificing his/her own happiness.
 Is there any connection of the title to the text?
 Yes, loving someone makes us forget about caring and loving yourself first. We
forget that we have our self in our life and we’re hurting our self most.

II. Nick Joaquin (Author)

 Biographical background of the Author


 Nicomedes “Onching” M. Joaquin was born on May 4, 1917 in Paco, Manila. He was
a Filipino writer, historian and journalist, best known for his short stories and novels
in the English language. He also wrote using the pen name Quijano de Manila. He
started to write short stories, poems, essays in 1934. Consider as a brilliant kid , he
did not get finish high school, he discovered that he could study more by reading
books on his own, and his father’s library had countless of the books he mind to read.
From reading, Joaquin became interested in writing. Joaquin joined the Philippines
Free Press, starting as a proofreader. He soon attracted notice for his poems, stories
and plays, as well as his journalism under the pen name Quijano de Manila. His
journalism was both intellectual and provocative, an unknown genre in the
Philippines at that time, and raised the country’s level of reportage. Joaquin died of
cardiac arrest in the early morning of April 29, 2004 (aged 86), at his home in San
Juan, Metro Manila. He wrote so variedly and so well about so many phase of the
Filipino throughout his entire life span.
