Initiative and Self-Direction

In our always-on, fast-paced, fl attened world of work, time for extended


training and motivational development is in very short supply. Workers must
arrive motivated, ready to use their initiative to get things done, and
prepared to be highly self-reliant in everyday work.
The amount of time busy managers have for mentoring and guiding
employees is quickly diminishing. Time, goals, project plans, workload, and
“just-in-time” learning must all be selfmanaged and self-directed in today’s
wound-up work world. Though teachers may be familiar with having a fairly
high level of independence and autonomy in their classrooms, helping
students become more self-reliant and independent as learners has always
been a challenge. Technology is helping, though, providing a wealth of
always-on self-service tools for researching and learning online.
The teacher coaches of the SARS team were amazed at the level of self-
direction, motivation, and independence their students demonstrated. They
asked for help at the start of the project, especially technical help in
selecting and using the right tools to create their Web site, and occasionally
during the course of the project when they hit particularly tricky technical
issues. Otherwise, they mostly relied on each other to help solve problems or
to find answers to their questions on the Internet. As one of the coaches said,
“The best thing about this group is, they know what they want and they just
go for it.”
Today’s students must prepare for the reality of 21st century work and
develop deeper levels of initiative and self-direction skills as they progress
through school. Offering each student the
ap propriate level of freedom to exercise self-direction and initiative is an
ongoing, universal challenge for both teachers and parents. Music, dance,
and theater performances; mentorships, apprenticeships, internships, and
community service projects; and student-developed projects and hobbies all
provide good opportunities to develop a passion for a subject and to exercise
self-motivation, initiative, and self-direction.

Initiative and Self-Direction Skills


Students should be able to:
Manage goals and time
• Set goals with tangible and intangible success criteria
• Balance tactical (short-term) and strategic (long-term) goals
• Utilize time and manage workload effi ciently
Work independently
• Monitor, define, prioritize and complete tasks without direct oversight
Be self-directed learners
• Go beyond basic mastery of skills and/or curriculum to explore and expand one’s
own learning and opportunities to gain expertise
• Demonstrate initiative to advance skill levels toward a professional level
• Demonstrate commitment to learning as a lifelong process
• Reflect critically on past experiences in order to inform future progress
Inisiatif dan Pengarahan Diri

Pada dunia kerja yang selalu aktif, bergerak cepat, dan datar, waktu untuk pelatihan
tambahan dan pengembangan motivasi sangat terbatas. Pekerja harus sudah termotivasi, siap
menggunakan inisiatif mereka untuk bekerja, dan siap untuk sangat mandiri dalam pekerjaan
sehari-hari. Manajer yang sibuk tidak memiliki waktu yang banyak untuk mendampingi dan
membimbing karyawan. Waktu, tujuan, rencana proyek, beban kerja, dan pembelajaran "tepat
waktu" harus dikelola dan diarahkan sendiri dalam dunia kerja akhir-akhir ini. Guru mungkin
terbiasa dengan tingkat kemandirian dan otonomi yang cukup tinggi di ruang kelas mereka,

Para pelatih dari tim SARS kagum pada tingkat pengarahan diri, motivasi, dan
kemandirian yang ditunjukkan oleh siswa mereka. Mereka meminta bantuan pada awal proyek,
terutama bantuan teknis dalam memilih dan menggunakan alat yang tepat untuk membuat situs
web mereka, dan kadang-kadang selama jalannya proyek ketika mereka mengalami masalah
teknis yang sangat rumit. Sebaliknya, mereka sebagian besar mengandalkan satu sama lain untuk
membantu memecahkan masalah atau untuk menemukan jawaban atas pertanyaan mereka di
Internet. Seperti yang dikatakan salah satu pelatih, "Hal terbaik tentang grup ini adalah, mereka
tahu apa yang mereka inginkan dan mereka melakukannya."

Siswa masa kini harus mempersiapkan diri untuk realitas pekerjaan abad ke-21 dan
mengembangkan tingkat inisiatif dan kemampuan pengarahan diri yang lebih dalam seperti yang
sedang mereka kembangkan melalui sekolah. Setiap siswa diberikan tingkat kebebasan yang
tepat untuk melakukan pengarahan diri dan inisiatif adalah tantangan universal yang
berkelanjutan bagi guru dan orang tua. Pertunjukan musik, tarian, dan teater; pendampingan,
magang, dan proyek layanan masyarakat; serta proyek dan hobi yang dikembangkan oleh siswa
semuanya memberikan peluang yang baik untuk mengembangkan minat dalam melatih motivasi
diri, inisiatif, dan pengarahan diri.

Inisiatif dan Kemampuan Pengarahan Diri

Siswa diharapkan dapat:

Mengelola tujuan dan waktu

• Menetapkan tujuan dengan kriteria keberhasilan yang nyata dan tidak berwujud

• Menyeimbangkan tujuan taktis (jangka pendek) dan strategis (jangka panjang)

• Memanfaatkan waktu dan kelola beban kerja secara efisien

Bekerja secara mandiri

• Memantau, menetapkan, memprioritaskan, dan menyelesaikan tugas tanpa pengawasan


langsung

Menjadi pembelajar mandiri

• Melampaui penguasaan dasar keterampilan dan / atau kurikulum untuk mengeksplorasi dan
memperluas pembelajaran dan peluang sendiri untuk mendapatkan keahlian

• Menunjukkan inisiatif untuk menaikkan keterampilan dari tingkat lanjut ke tingkat profesional

• Menunjukkan komitmen untuk belajar sebagai proses seumur hidup

• Merefleksikan secara kritis pengalaman-pengalaman masa lalu sebagai pembelajaran untuk


kemajuan di masa depan
