Adidas makes over 400 million pairs of shoes annually which requires many resources. To be more environmentally friendly, Adidas partners with Parley to collect ocean plastic trash from coastal areas like the Maldives. This trash is then turned into small plastic flakes, melted into pellets, and spun into polyester yarn used to make 11 million pairs of shoes in 2019. Ultimately, Adidas' goal is to substitute all virgin polyester with recycled polyester by 2024 and develop a fully recyclable shoe called Futurecraft Loop available in 2021.
