1 Peter 5:6-14 (ESV)

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he

may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be

sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking

someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are

being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a

little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself

restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever.

Amen. 12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting

and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. 13 She who is at Babylon, who

is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. 14 Greet one another with

the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

2. The Need for Alertness (1 Peter 5:8-11)
3. Conclusion (1 Peter 5:12-14)

Discussion Questions

1. Am I humbling myself before God? Am I acknowledging that I live under God’s mighty
control and casting all my anxieties on God with the assurance that He cares for me?

2. Do I recognize Satan as a roaring lion who wants to devour me (whether it be through

not discerning properly, anger I can’t let go of, worries, anxieties, temptations)? How can
I be on alert and resist the devil?

3. What does it mean that after a little while God himself will restore, confirm, strengthen,
and establish me? Do I truly believe this?

4. What is the true grace of God?

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has
caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the
last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved
by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that
perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the
revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:3-7)

“And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, ‘Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom
of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been
thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him
by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even
unto death.’” (Revelation 12:10-11)
