Semester Earth Retaining Structures Subject code-CE 616

This document contains a mid-semester examination for an Earth Retaining Structures course. It includes 4 questions that assess the students' understanding of: [1] Coulomb's and Rankine's earth pressure theories and how to calculate lateral earth pressure coefficients using theories of elasticity; [2] using Culmann's graphical method to determine active lateral earth pressures for a retaining wall with a sloped backfill; and [3] calculating active thrust on a retaining wall retaining a sand backfill with a surcharge and water table, and checking the stability of another retaining wall against sliding and overturning failure using Rankine's theory.

Earth Retaining Structures Subject code- CE 616

Full Marks – 30 Time allotted- 2 hours

Answer all Questions.
Assume any relevant data, if required.
Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks.
Q. No Marks

1. a) What are assumptions and applicability of Coulomb’s and Rankine’s earth 2

pressure theory?

b) Write a short note on active and passive earth pressure under seismic 3
loading.
c) Using theory of elasticity, determine the lateral earth pressure coefficient at 2
rest (K0).

d) For sandy soil using Mohr’s circle show that lateral passive earth pressure 3

where is the vertical pressure, is the angle of internal friction.

2. A 4 m high retaining wall has back face inclined (α = 82o). The backfill
(γ = 17.8 kN/m3, = 30o) is inclined upwards at 10o to the horizontal.
The angle of wall friction (δ) is 20 o. Determine the lateral active earth
pressure exerted by backfill using Culman’s graphical method.

3 A retaining wall with a smooth, vertical backface has to retain a sand

backfill up to a height of 5 m. A uniform surcharge of 50 kN/m2 is
placed over the backfill. The water table is 2 m below G.L. The
specific gravity of solids and void ratio of the backfill are 2.65 and 0.8, 6
respectively. The soil above the water table has a degree of saturation
of 10%. The angle of internal friction of the soil above and below
water table are found to be 30 and 29o. Determine the magnitude and
point of application resultant active thrust on the wall.
