Q. No Marks
1. a) What are assumptions and applicability of Coulomb’s and Rankine’s earth 2
pressure theory?
b) Write a short note on active and passive earth pressure under seismic 3
loading.
c) Using theory of elasticity, determine the lateral earth pressure coefficient at 2
rest (K0).
d) For sandy soil using Mohr’s circle show that lateral passive earth pressure 3
where is the vertical pressure, is the angle of internal friction.

2. A 4 m high retaining wall has back face inclined (α = 82o). The backfill
(γ = 17.8 kN/m3, = 30o) is inclined upwards at 10o to the horizontal.
The angle of wall friction (δ) is 20 o. Determine the lateral active earth
pressure exerted by backfill using Culman’s graphical method.
3 A retaining wall with a smooth, vertical backface has to retain a sand
backfill up to a height of 5 m. A uniform surcharge of 50 kN/m2 is
placed over the backfill. The water table is 2 m below G.L. The
specific gravity of solids and void ratio of the backfill are 2.65 and 0.8, 6
respectively. The soil above the water table has a degree of saturation
of 10%. The angle of internal friction of the soil above and below
water table are found to be 30 and 29o. Determine the magnitude and
point of application resultant active thrust on the wall.

4. Check the stability of the retaining wall shown in Fig. 1 against sliding failure
and overturning failure. Use Rankine’s theory. All dimensions are in meter 7
