Experiment 1-2 Three-Phase Half Controlled Converter PDF

The document describes an experiment on a 3-phase half-controlled bridge converter with the following objectives: 1) Study and test the firing circuit of the converter 2) Obtain waveforms of the converter with resistive and resistive-inductive loads The converter consists of three thyristors and three diodes in a bridge configuration. Only one thyristor from the top group and one diode from the bottom group conduct at a time. The output voltage is controlled by varying the firing angles of the thyristors. Equations are provided to calculate the output RMS voltage for firing angles less than and greater than 60 degrees. Results of the experiment on the converter are referenced but not detailed.

Experiment-1

Objectives:
1) Study and test the firing circuit of 3-phase half-controlled bridge converter.
2) Study and obtain waveforms of 3 phase half-controlled bridge converter with R and
RL loads.
Brief Theory:
1.1. 3-phase half-controlled bridge converter -
The three phase half-controlled converters are used in many of industrial applications. The
circuit configuration of the three-phase half-controlled converter consists three diodes and
three thyristors on the top and bottom group of its bridge respectively. The use of three
thyristors instead of six thyristors, as in fully controlled converters, reduces the complexity of
the firing circuit. It is also known as 3-phase semi-controlled converter.
1.2. Circuit configuration of 3-phase half-controlled bridge converter –
The circuit diagram of 3-phase half-controlled converter is shown in Fig. 1.1 below with the
RL-load. A freewheeling diode is also connected in parallel with the load for the continuous
conduction of the current through it. The thyristors and diodes are operated in such a way
that only one thyristor from top group and one diode from the bottom group conduct at a
time, in the continuous conduction mode.

The output voltage 𝑉𝑜 across the load terminal is controlled by varying the firing angles of
SCRs 𝑇1 , 𝑇3 and 𝑇5 . The diodes 𝐷4 , 𝐷6 and 𝐷2 provide merely a return path for the current to
the most negative line terminal. The operation of the 3-phase semi-controlled converter at
the different firing angle of thyristors is explained in the result section. It can be observed
from the responses of the converter that a 3-phase semi converter, SCRs are gated at an
interval of 120o in a proper sequence. A three-phase semi converter has the unique feature
of working as a six-pulse converter for α < 60o and as a three-pulse converter for α ≥ 60o .
The output rms voltage of the 3-phase half-controlled converter can be derived for the
different firing angle of the thyristors. The output rms voltage of the converter for α < 60o
can be expressed as follows-
