Porphyry Deposits - Introduction Porphyry Deposits - Characteristics

1) Porphyry deposits are large tonnage, low grade deposits that are bulk mineable. They are associated with porphyritic intrusions. 2) They have stockwork and breccia hosted orebodies with large volumes of hydrothermal alteration. They can have supergene enrichment near the surface. 3) Their metal content, including copper, gold, and molybdenum, relates to the composition and oxidation state of the associated magma. More evolved, oxidized magmas tend to form copper-gold deposits while reduced magmas form molybdenum or tin deposits.
