DETAILED LESSON PLAN
In
Mathematics Grade-8
I.OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a) define what range is,
b) calculate the range of grouped data,
c) participate actively during discussion.
II.SUBJECT MATTER:
Topic: Range of Grouped Data
Reference: Mathematics – 8; page 544-545
Materials: Cartolina, colored paper, Manila paper, chalk
III. PROCEDURE:
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
A. Preparation
May we all rise for the short prayer.
Benjie-mae, kindly lead us a short prayer. “AMEN”
Good morning class! Good morning too Ma’am.
Anyone who is absent class? Nobody Ma’am.

B. Motivation
Match column A with column B to decode your
answer.
I will give 3 minutes to do your activity.
____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____

Column A Column B
1) {21, 26, 31, 39, 40} A – 20
2) {25, 30, 35, 40, 45} B – 32

C. Discussion
Today, we will discuss about the range of group
data.
Artly, kindly read the definition of range. Range is simply the difference between the upper
class boundary of the top interval and the lower
class boundary of the bottom interval.
R = upper class boundary of the highest interval
– lower class boundary of the lowest
interval
Example 1: Solve for the range.
The scores of Grade – 8 students in Mathematics
– 8.
Score Frequency
46-50 1
41-45 10
36-40 10
31-35 16
26-30 9
21-25 4
SOLUTION:
Upper class limit of the highest level
= 50
Upper class boundary of the highest class interval
= 50 + 0.5 = 50.5
Lower class limit of the of the lowest interval
= 21
Lower class boundary of the lowest interval
= 21 – 0.5 = 20.5
R = upper class boundary of the highest interval –
lower class boundary of the lowest interval
R = 50.5 – 20.5
R = 30
30 is the range score of Grade-8 students
in Mathematics-8.
Can you follow class?
Yes/No Ma’am
Okay, in getting the upper class boundary of the
highest interval you add 0.5 to the highest score,
and also in getting the lower class boundary of
the lowest class interval you subtract 0.5 to the
lowest score.
Understood class?
Yes/No Ma’am
Example 2: The scores of the Grade-10 students
in the 4th year Periodic-Test in Mathematics.
Score Frequency
41-45 1
36-40 8
31-35 8
26-30 14
21-25 7
16-20 2
11-15 5
SOLUTION:
Upper class limit of the highest level
= 45
Upper class boundary of the highest class interval
= 45 + 0.5 = 45.5
Lower class limit of the of the lowest interval
= 11
Lower class boundary of the lowest interval
= 11 – 0.5 = 10.5
R = upper class boundary of the highest interval –
lower class boundary of the lowest interval
R = 45.5 – 10.5
R = 35
35 is the range score of the Grade-10
students in the 4th year Periodic-Test in
Mathematics.
Understood class?
Yes Ma’am.
Any questions?
None Ma’am.

28-30 5
31-33 5
34-36 4
37-39 3
40-42 2
43-45 1
2) The ages of the Grade-8 students are listed
below:
Age Frequency
12-15 10
16-19 5
20-23 3
24-27 2
28-31 5
32-35 5

E. Generalization
What is the definition of the range again class?
Range is simply the difference between the upper
class boundary of the top interval and the lower
class boundary of the bottom interval.
Exactly!
