For the cyber safety lesson, the teacher plans to show a short video on online safety tips. They will then lead a discussion with prompts about important safety practices. Students will complete a worksheet individually with questions about the video. The next class will include a short quiz to assess understanding. For the cyberbullying lesson, another short video is planned to demonstrate an example of cyberbullying. The teacher will again lead a discussion with prompts. Digital Citizenship Project

Topic 1: Cyber Safety

https://youtu.be/yrln8nyVBLU

Discussion/Lecture:

 For this lesson, I would begin by having the class watch the video above.
o I have chosen this video because of the layout; it gets the message across of online
safety while also keeping things lighthearted and fun for the students. Also, I like that
the video is shorter because it is easy to lose the concept in too much information. The
video brings up several key points for online safety and reminds students of things they
should consider every time they log on.
 Next, I would begin to discuss the video we just watched, asking if anyone has any questions or
comments.
 Allow students to discuss the topic, using prompts if needed.
 Example Discussion Prompts:
o Why is it so important to be safe online?
o What are some of the things that we can do in order to stay safe on the web?
o What kind of passwords should we use? What kind of passwords should we not?
 To finish up the class, I would hand out a short worksheet to the students to be done
individually that covers the topic. (See worksheet below)

Time: Video/Discussion/Worksheet will all take 1 Class Period; Quiz will take place at the beginning of
another Class Period.

Materials Needed: Video will be played on projector by instructor, students will only need a writing
utensil and worksheet that is given to them by teacher. Quiz will be given by instructor and students will
also only need something to write with this day.

Applications and Research: Worksheet was created on Microsoft Word and Cyber Safety information
comes from YouTube video, “Safe Web Surfing: Top Tips for Kids and Teens Online” by WatchWellCast.
Questions were formed based off the video’s content.

Objective: This quick refresher of digital safety will help students remember to always be safe online, to
choose their privacy settings wisely, and what to avoid in their day to day lives. For high schoolers, they
should have some previous knowledge of internet safety, therefore, this short video and worksheet will
help to trigger the thought process that should go through their minds while on the web.

Assessment Tools: In order to assure that the students grasp the information discussed in this lesson,
they will be given a short quiz the next day over the concepts covered. (See quiz below). Each question
will be worth two points, the students will be given one point for answering the question and one point
for the correct answer. If the students in class receive a 70% or higher, this means that they understood
the material.

Cyber Safety Worksheet

After watching the video and discussing in class, please
answer the following questions.
1.) According to the video, what are two examples of personal information
that we should NEVER put online?

2.) What is something you can change to ensure that only people you know
are viewing your social media pages?

3.) If you receive a phone call or text message from an unknown source,
should you answer it and carry on a conversation with them? Why or
Why Not?

4.) True or False: “PASSWORD” is a safe and secure password to use online.

5.) If you get hacked, it is impossible to know everything that the hacker has
been doing while controlling your identity. Of the following options,
which of them should you always do after you have been hacked?

A. Nothing, at this point, it’s out of your hands, whatever happens,

happens.
B. Get a new account and try to start over, allowing the old one to
stay in the hands of the hacker.
C. Contact your friends and family, letting them know that you have
been hacked, just in case something fishy comes their way.
D. Clean your hard drive as soon as possible and change your
password.
E. Both C and D

6.) If you go in for a job interview in 20 years, and they bring up some
photos you posted of you and your friends back in high school, even
though you deleted all of those off of social media months ago, why were
they able to find this information?

Cyber Safety Quiz

Based off our previous lesson on Cyber Safety, please
answer the following questions.
1.) True or False: It is always okay to give out your social security number,
phone number, and personal address to others online.

2.) What is an example of a “bad” password?

3.) You only need to use cyber safety on which of the following digital
forms?

A. Social Media
B. Your smartphone
C. Family Desktop Computer
D. All of the Above

4.) True or False: Just because you delete a picture off your personal
account, does NOT mean that it is gone everywhere.

5.) If you get hacked online, what do you need to check for afterwards in the
background?
Joanna Lockwood 5

6.) True or False: If you are super careful online and never do anything
wrong, you will never get hacked.

Topic 2: Cyberbullying

https://youtu.be/bW__Dg4588E

Discussions/Lecture:

 For this lesson, I would start class by having the students watch the short video above.
o I chose this short, comedic video in order to show students an example of cyberbullying
and how it can go extremely wrong. While researching online for different videos on
cyberbullying, some of them are a little too dark for the high school age group. This
video comes from a different angle, while it still gets the point across to students that
bullying online can stick with you forever.
 Next, I would open the floor for discussion. Using prompts to guide the students through the
topic. Students can use previous knowledge or personal experience along with this topic.
 Example Discussion Prompts:
o What are some different ways that cyberbullying can happen?
o What would be a good way to ignore or get away from cyberbullying?
o Who are some people that you can talk to about any issues you or someone you know is
going through online?
 To wrap up class, I would split the class into groups of 3 or 4 students and hand out a worksheet
that has a scenario on it. (See worksheet below)

Time: Video/Discussion/Worksheet Activity will all be in 1 Class Period and Quiz will be at the beginning
of the next Class Period.

Materials Needed: Video is played on projector by instructor, students will just need a writing utensil
and the worksheet activity that is provided by the teacher in class. Quiz is also provided by teacher;
students will only need something to write with for this as well.

Applications and Research: Worksheet Activity was created in Microsoft Word and video was found on
YouTube, “Cyberbullying Video for Schools (Lessons/Education) for Middle School and High School
Students” by KeithDeltano. Questions were based from video as well as knowledge from the Module 2:
Common Sense – Digital Citizenship Content for Teachers: Cyber-bullying and Digital Drama.

Objective: By watching the video and having the students openly discuss this topic, it reminds them of
the harm of cyberbullying and the importance of being kind to one another online. The video shows
students just how wrong one negative post online can turn a student’s life upside down. By having
students break up into smaller groups and discuss the scenario they are given, this allows them to
bounce ideas off each other, all coming together for a positive reason, to help someone who is being put
down.

Assessment Tools: The next day after the cyberbullying group activity, students will be given a short quiz
to make sure they understood the covered material. Students will receive two points per question, one
Joanna Lockwood 6

for answering the question and the second for having the correct answer. If the students receive a 70%
or above, it will be understood that they grasped the material.

Cyberbullying: What should you do?

The following scenario includes a student struggling with
cyberbullying. After reading the prompt, please discuss with
your group and write a one paragraph response describing what
actions should be taken to help the victim and what are some of
the possible consequences that could happen to the bully?

Stacey is a sophomore at West High School. She just started in the fall
at West and moved in from a different state. Stacey has a couple of friends
and enjoys the teachers at her new school. Unfortunately, a few weeks in,
she begins to receive hateful comments on her Facebook page. Some of
them saying, “Go back to where you came from” and “We never asked for
you”. Shortly after the comments are posted, Stacey realizes that most of
them are from students at West High School. She begins to feel insecure
and unwanted at her new school. A few comments turn into several, and
Stacey continues to keep it to herself. She decides that she shouldn’t bother
anyone with her problems and obviously no one would care even if she did.
Please write your groups paragraph response below:
