Top Mountain Bike Brands Ranked
Top Mountain Bike Brands Ranked
Remember when you were a kid jumping off curbs and plowing through puddles on your bike?
How sweet was that And now things are even better. You can really get dirty, hit some serious
jumps, and bomb down hills your mom never would have let you attempt back then.
Of course all that modern requires that you have a ride that is up to the challenge. Mountain
bikes today are amazingly well engineered. They are so much lighter, stronger, and smoother
than ever before so when you get a good mountain bike, your ride works for you instead of
against you.
Deciding which bike to get isn't necessarily an easy decision. There are a lot of quality brands
out there and you'll need to find something that fits your budget. Ultimately, the best thing you
can do is get out and test drive a variety of models so I can't recommend that you use this list of
best mountain bike brands as the ultimate authority on what to buy. Instead, use it as a good
starting point that will end with you having great toy you can use to tear up the trails.

+53 Excellent, but very expensive once I grow up I'll get Glory DH, I swear!
thumbs upthumbs down
+40I have a Giant Yukon, very comfortable to ride and maintenance free.
+32I'm sixty five years old but still enjoyed riding my Giant mtb, its very sturdy thanks to the
asean craftmen who build it.

+45I'm 6'5" and 310 lbs. After snapping the frame of a Cannondale then ruining the fork
suspension on a Giant, I took the advice of my buddy at Bicycles Unlimited and gave Trek a try -
that was seven years ago and it's still going strong, having only replaced the tires, brake pads,
and a brake cable. With no disrespect to any other brands, Trek is the best brand to me.
+21I'm from philippines, I have a great experience with this two brands the specialized and trek,
both hardtail. First, I own specialized which gives me a smooth ride. But, after using for 1yr
4mos and 8days, I notice that the base part of my specialized body has a small crack, which is
not good for me. Then I planned to buy a new one to replace my specialized body, I choose two
brands trek and bianchi. I ask the owner of the store, which one has a good quality. He said, that
both body have good quality in terms of weight. Bianchi, is like your biking in the mud. While
trek has a good performance and high quality. No doubt, I choose trek 6500. And I never regret
choosing my trek, now I'm using it for 2yrs and 22days.
Thank you trek bicycle company, you are the most reputable company in the whole worldwide...
Keep up the good work guys...

+21Best bikes on the planet, hands down. There's a reason there were 5 at the olympics more than
any other brand!
+17Invested in a StumpJumper 13 years ago, put billions of miles on it, and it still feels like new
every time I ride it. Thanks to Specialized for making such a killer bike.

4Santa Cruz
+16This list sucks, Huffy, K2, Dunlop, Mongoose, and Magna all suck. And by the way speaking
of Huffy's, it is a well known fact that the 2 worst kind of bikes you can get are Huffy's and
Murray's. Schwinn sold out in the mid 1990's, and KHS is a sub brand of Diamondback another
brand that sold out. Plus Gary Fisher is a sub brand of Trek. Sub brand meaning it's the exact
same brand of bike with a different name on it. Plus Haro's and GT's may make decent beginner
mountain bikes, but their both still brands of bike more known and better suited for being an
aggressive trick/skate park & MBX style of bike. But just for the record, Santa Cruz bikes are the
best for mountain they are one of very few bike companies that only make mountain bikes and
have their bikes manufactured in the US.
+9I have SC superlight 2012, eventhough still use single pivot but it is very good climber. Light
frame and valuable price. I also had chameleon, and I'm satisfied with the performance.
thumbs upthumbs down
+8Got my aluminum nomad and it is perfect for me up and down hill ride. It's geometry gives me
ease pedaling either way. Arnimator

+15I have a 12 year old GT Aggressor and I batter it week in week out. It just doesn't break I am
replacing soon with a GT 29er fantastic brand and heritage
+12I've got a gt legacy hybrid bike I ride 20 miles every day and have only changed the brake
blocks I really think gt are great I've had it 5 years oh yeh and had to change the tyres a few
times
+11I love my GT Fury Carbon. When I use it, it makes m feel like I'm flying because of the
suspensions in the back and in the front. Its a 10-speed type of mountain bike.

6Cannondale
+13 I have cannondale SL3.
I just love my bike, gear shifting is effortless. The best part is that you get both derailers of Sram
X5 at such low cost.
+8I love my lefty! Smooth ride, easy downhill, quick change with front shocks.
+1I Just got a SL 5 Great bike for only 700. Way better than the Trek that I owned. It can ride
over just about anything. It's disk Brakes are Really nice and it handles great since it is a 29er
and it has rigid Kenda Tire big ole fat tires. Better than Trek no Doubt. Almost bought the Trek
Wahoo instead but I upgraded.

7Merida
+21VERY GOOD, GREAT QUALITY, SIMPLY ONE OF THE BEST BICYCLES I HAVE
EVER DRIVEN. I OWN ONE SINCE 2009. MERIDA MATTS 40D
+11I have bought 3 merida bicycles till now and I only have to say that this brand is awesome...
You pay the money but you get the quality and equipment, not the name... For example if you
choose between the best 2-3 brands and merida, for same price bicycle,... With merida you will
get better equipment for sure
+12Previously I was a big bike rider(bikers)... Sportbike & easy rider.. One of my buddy introduce
me to the cycling arena.. I start jump out when my 1st bike MERIDA MATT 40 finally climbing
up from Simpang Pulai to Tanah Rata Uphill Cameron highland (Malaysia).. Tremendously
without hesitation 90km uphill seems very smooth with my merida... Thanks for the design.. If

+5Just bought a used one, very nice, brand with style, rides like a Specialized, cheap, conclusion
very good for mtb. Very recomended... @engax
My girlfriend big sur has fallen down more mountain and cliffs than I can count. But when it
ripped itself off my bike rack at 60 mph on the freeway and suffered only a couple scratches -
then I knew it was immortal.
-1Great bikes at great prices. I ride specialized and cannondale also and like my Fishers the best

+1Awesome indestructible frames in my own personal experience, I Have a 1992 bear valley se
that I still ride to work & as a result purchased a 2011 bobcat trail frame with a rockshox reba
fork & slx group set which is superb around trail centres & aggressive xc routes. Very happy
with Marin & recommend them, just watch standard OEM parts list though they can be a bit
under specced.
+1Marin will always be in my heart! Its what got me into bikes 94 bobcat trail it was so nice I
kept it for 7yrs until it got stolen, they broke my heart. Marin were and still are the best and best
of all you can't nip to tesco or halfords to buy 1.

10Kona
This is the best brand. I'm from Mexico and it's complicated to get a Kona, but once you have get
it you're gonna love it. This brand offers the best relation price - quality product, you should
check what offers Kona in the same range of price before buying another bike, because you
always gonna find a better bike por the same price. Also Kona always is innovating, and other
brands only copy the designs that Kona and others are doing. Oh and don't forget the Africa
programs that Kona is making. Sorry about my english writing. I hope it works for new cyclist.
+1Great bikes, lots of fitment options, and they're built beautifully. I started off with a Giant
Rainier (which I really liked), but when I graduated to a Kona Kahuna, the difference in both
weight and usability was palpable. But... Buying a bike is a lot like buying a suit - it's not just
about fashion, it's about the quality of the material, the quality of the accoutrements (i.E. the
componentry), and MOST IMPORTANTLY, the fit.
+2Bought a Kona Explosif in Grade 9. Still riding it today. Grade 9 was in 1991 for me. The bike
has received various upgrades over the years and has always been stored indoors. It's a great bike
and has served me very well. I grew up in a mountain town and rode that bike in some really
gnarly terrain. I've since bought a Kona for my wife and she loves it!

Huge range to choose from road, to kids, womens, dh, all mountain, trail, xc and a few more
varieties to choose from.
13KHS
+7This list does not suck! Readers must understand that this list is based on votes. So vote. KHS
build their own bikes after buying design rights they consider to be top of their game. They then
construct it with their own expertise! Buy one and it will shut you up! Good budget bike is a bad
description! My frame cost £500 15 years ago and Advertising is a good way to sell crap. If you
like KHS then you are smart and know your Quality
+12The best for the money!
+2I have a really customized XCT 555 and this thing rips! I absolutely love how I can ride all day
on the trails and It just never gives me any hassles. I can also press it into a downhill bike in a
pinch and it will hold its own against larger 8 inch travel machines! My husband now wants one
instead of his GT. Having had Trek, Specialized and Giant bike I am a hardcore KHS fan now

down the track like a DH bike. Geometry, components, design (with hydroformed tubes) are just
perfect. Very appreciated brand in France.

+2I have worked for a number of bike shops and companies, and spend a lot of time riding. That
said, I have tried numerous bikes: Raleigh, Kona, Specialized, GT, Haro, etc. And of all of them,
K2 is definitely right at the top. Sometimes they get a bit of a bad rap because of some of their
economy lines you find at places like Sports Authority and Dicks. Those are ok introductory
bikes made specifically for those companies. However, their primary lines that they sale via The
Hub, and other K2 shops is definitively a legit bike.
+1Ya k2 is really good. They make strong durable bikes and have pro detail and you can tell a lot
of attention is put in to them, if you don't believe me go buy one for yourself.

19Cube
+1I have a Cube AMS 130 SL (2013) and it is without doubt the best all mountain bikes I have
ever ridden. Although not cheap, it's frame and rear linkage is beautifully made and creates a
responsive ride that absorbs small and big hits with ease giving you the confidence to go faster
than you would think possible! Awesome components for the money, seriously lightweight and
looks amazing! Highly recommend Cube and their German engineering and manufacturing.
+9Great bikes, reasonably priced, cool colors, and they look amazing, have good quality parts,
you get the most for your money.
+8Great bikes, value for money also the bikes are fitted with excellent parts.
Very reliable ride.

It has a solid frame you can imagine. Just purchase the frame standalone and then equip with the
best components out there in the market. Those who are looking for clone bikes can consider...

21Haro
+1Not a lot of bicycle shop around my area carry Haro brand. I live in Nothridge, CA and only 1
out of 4 bike shop carry this brand. My co-workers had gotten me into MTB'ing, and their bikes
ranges from $1200-2800 MTBs'. Kona Kahuna 29er, Specialized Rockhopper Pro 29, Giant
XTC Composte 29er 1, and what do I have? That's right, Haro. 6 months of hard riding and it
still runs good... Oh yea, funny thing, I have a Haro Flightline One 26 :)
I bought a flightline trail 26 2013 model and I was amazed by its capability knowing that their
company is more known in building BMX bikes the Haro mountain bike that I have right now
truly exudes all my expectation, its very light, its easy to manouver, components are up par with
the rest of its kind, this one is truly a value for money.
+1I bought Haro 'cause of the price. Went for Flightline 2010 model, limited Croatia edition.
Invested and received is more than great. With some modification gear wise it has become a real
muscle mountain bike. Been riding it now for a year and can't wait start of the new season.

24Raleigh
+3This is the first 'branded' bike I own, (I would not consider Wal-mart bikes as 'branded'... More
sort of generic) and I have had very good rides on it, both in paved and dirt roads, being the
longest a 50 mile ride along the baja coast, it performed excellent going up hill, very light, and
on the way down it it zoomed up to 45MPH very smoothly, no vibration, no shakes... Very
pleased with mi bike, wonder why it's so up in the rankings...
+6Raleigh's are on the comeback. They slipped a little in the past but the bikes are top notch now
and still priced well. The Euro pro team is going to help with the dated perception some people
may still be hanging onto.

27Mosso

climbs, power transfer is well felt thru speed. I recommend this frame for XC riders and
recreational riders too.

Very cheap, but very poorly made and spec is not good and very heavy.
29Schwinn
+6Schwinn should actually be in the top ten. This list is probably not the most accurate seeing as
how people equate quality with price. Watching the Tour de France and buying a bike based on
what is being raced does not determine quality of bike.
I have a 1994 Schwinn Mesa GS and have NEVER had a problem with it. Would love to have a
new bike but my friends just bought Specialized bikes, which are good bike in their own right,
but they have had problems all ready, so I'll stick to what I know, Thanks Schwinn! For been an
AWESOME bike!

future but for now he uses the cheaper one.

30Ryder
+5I love Ryder stride competition series as I ride confidently in the mountain trails. The Ryder
design combination of colors is unique that tend to encourage the mountain bike riders to choose
the same.
I have a ryder 26er so far I been using it for almost 6monts and it never fails me. The parts are
very good. For tall person I encourage you to buy ryder bike because it fits the height... And if

Good starter bikes. I've put 4,500km in the last year. It's hung in there quite well. Not the best but
a good place to start.
Average bike, cheap = top choice for beginners, softcore riders. It also has some pro-models
(reasonable price)...
Good quality bike & cheap! Go to decathlon and try one of those! You can try it for free inside
the shop. What is bad: they have few colors, but maybe thiefs will also not like those colors and
will go for another bikes.
33GTS
+4I have my GTS M7 downhill mtb its little bit heavy compare to my GIANT XTC but nice
frame design and good performance...
I have GTS frame too (gts foi) its weight is just a bike pedal.
34SGM
+2SGM is nice specially when you upgrade it with high-end components. It't the best when you
want a ride and have low budget. It comes with ordinary parts. I just voted this to support SGM
but still the best for me is GIANT. Because its balance with durability performance and lightness
is the best. They have the best tech. Only the price is not the best... Happy riding!
+4Nice bike and affordable...

+2Diamondback with higher level SRAM components... Tough relatively light and smooth.
Looks good and performs with Rock Shox mid end fork with lockout and fully adjustable
rebound. You can spend thousands more but if your not a pro this set up is incredibly bullet
proof and affordable!
+2I have had three over the years and I have never regretted it. My latest is the Response.
Adjustable forks, beefy tires, and bulletproof frame. Some say that the derailers and cassette is
lacking, but put the rapid fire triggers and a proper adjustment and go pound the dirt.
Good bikes when bought at a bike shop! All official bike reviews usually put mid range

47Jamis
Jamis is thus far a good brand for a mountain bike. I was given the TRAIL X3 (2011) model
+2
and once I've began to use it on a recreational purpose, I saw how light it was, though was a bit
apprehensive on the way it drags---turns out the tires are mostly for off-road terrains. However,
once I got the hang of biking, we (along with my biker friends who are avid fans of the Giant,
Cervelo, and other popular brand) decided to go on a hardcore biking, from mile-long uphills,
which, owing to the thick threads of the tyres, was pretty challenging. However, come downhill,
the geometry of the Jamis Trail X3 proved that it was designed to have a great gravity-geometry-
aero-dynamics ratio. Was hardly pedaling but I kinda left most of my peers downhill. But that's
not all, once put to the OFF-ROAD TEST, man, the combination of the specs and the design
proved that it the Jamis Trail X3 will give out a powerful off-road performance. Am so satisfied
with the Victory Red color given to me that I decided to give it to my nephew so he could donate
his generic bike and bike with me. Oh, and I bought the "dirt" colored for myself. Yep, I so
recommend this that I bought a second of the same model (though I got the 'dirt' color).
By the way, I'm from the Philippines, and a practicing lawyer/musician who just loves adventure
so much that while very much eccentric with my ways, am veery meticulous when it comes to
my equipment, expensive or otherwise. The Jamis Trail X3 is definitely worth every money you
pay for it.
I have a durango 1 in the victory red and white combo I love but I'm a 300 pound rider and a I
beat on doing downhill I will upgrade some components because of my size but even with that I
have been beating on it for 3 years in the rough northeast terrain. I did change over to a rockshox
xc32 becaues the gila pro only held up about a year with me on it other than that great bike and I
bought it a model year later for trail xc prices
Just got one at the start of summer and I can't love my new bike any more than I already do...
This is a great bike for off road and on road biking. I find that it is quite comfortable, very light
and seriously awesome in almost every way. Only thing is that when you first get it you want to
replace the tire with nice thorn resistance ones... My tires popped the first day I took it out before
I replaced the tubes inside them.

Own a KTM Ultra Flite. Good and solid frame yet light in weight. For a company that initially
started as a Metalworking company, they sure show their expertise in their frames. For those
with doubts, try a KTM yourself and you would know what their MTBs are all about. They may
be more known for their dirt bikes but its quality and expertise shows across their different
business segments.

51Niner Bikes
+2Niner bikes have the best geometry period. I have rode Gary Fisher, Cannondale, Specialized
too but I always go back to my Niner. Fast as hell and climbs like a beast. Niner bikes should
easily no questions ask be in the top 10. Go ride one and see for yourself!
The best bike I ever had. Rode on Merida, Giant and Norco, but nothing match Niner's

53Iron Horse
+6Very beautiful design and color combining, light weight and cheap. Have strong frame
structure, can go all type of trail. If you buy this bike and another bike with same price, you will
know the iron horse item is super quality. I have seven mtb, one of it is iron horse, another like
giant, merida, norco that more expensive than iron horse but from all I choose iron horse because
more comfortable, and very straching design. And another reason is, if we talk with our friend or
anyone about mtb, we just need say IRON HORSE and your partner will automatically know the
aroma of iron horse. Seriously cheap, from another mtb brand.
+1I own 7 Iron Horse bikes and they are the best bikes I have ever owned! Most of the other bikes
on the list above this brand don't actually deserve to be on there. Mongoose is one of the worst
brands! If you want a cheap, piece of crap then don't get a Iron Horse. Well constructed and built

56Motobécane
I picked up a Fantom 29r elite for 899.00 these are the specs. Frame MOTO29HX Kinesis
Engineered Aluminum with TrailTuned PowerStay Design, DualProfile Hydroformed Downtube
with reinforced Gusset, replaceable rear derailleur hanger, downtube bottle mount, seat tube
accessory mount
Fork ROCKSHOX RECON SILVER TK29 SOLO AIR 29" QR 100mm LongTravel W/External
rebound and TurnKey lockout
Not only that, but the value of a brand new Motobecane Fantom Pro can't be beat! Full XTR
component set, Avid Elixir brakes, and Rockshox Reba Race fork and Monarch RT3 out back,
plus super smooth cartridge bearing wheels, all for under 2k, what a deal! I only wish I had
bought mine new, but building it up has been a blast!
I ride as much as possible and can shred trails on this bike. It's never let me down. Sure it doesn't
have fancy shaped tubes or a super complex suspension system, but it works! While their lower
end bikes might be lumped with wal-mart quality bikes, their higher end stuff is on par with most
name brand bikes, without hurting the wallet too much. I've even read about people building up
motobecanes into sub 20lb racing machines. Mine weighs above 30lbs, but I prefer going down
than up, and if I need to shed a few pounds, I can lose it from my belly.
I'll ride this bike till I destroy it. For the price, this brand can't be beat.
57Orange
+3Fantastic downhill bikes. Super lightweight, strong, durable. A bit on the pricey side but they
are worth the money. The best bike I've had... BY FAR!
I have orange very nice in/on off road...
Amazing bikes! Expensive but the quality is great. Orange crush 2011 best hardtail I've ever rode

+10 Nice bike. Bike for strong men

60Capriolo
Surprisingly good value for money. If they keep making these kind of bikes, they might get more
expensive over time. If you want to have fun with your bike check out new big nine model, I
tried one owned by my friend, and it is quite good entry level MTB.
I have Capriolo Roadster and my humble opinion is that that is very good bike, strong for heavy
people (I'am 125 kg or 250 lbs), fast and comfortable for road and city driving.
Great values bikes using good components and very well made.

62Avanti
+3Firtstly Avanti should be in top 10 because I uses all the 'top of the line ' components such as
FOX 32 RACING FORKS and ROCK SHOX FORKS and AVID XX WORLD CUP BRAKES
and have a variety of CARBON FRAMES, 7005 ULTRALITE ALLOY FRAMES and use DT
SWISS RIMS and SPOKES and SRAM XX and SHIMANO XTR components... When you
think about it a bike ' brand ' as such comes down to its quality in components and accessories
and these matter in purpose of the use of the bike... By john b
+3Fantastic New Zealand brand. Small range of very well designed bikes.
Greatest Hard tails, such great components :)just feels like it glides wherever you ride and
whatever you ride on... The ride is so smooth it makes you feel lazy

+4Awesome bike, that has good overall performance and stability. Good for off road and trail
riding, can handle a good amount of stick from me.
Amazing bike, takes on trails and paths with ease, cheep and affordable. Great for a first time
buy for anyone! 21 gear speed ratio is perfect for anyone
Best bike I've eve had
64Muddy Fox
Best mouton bike cycle in the world I have ever tried
Mine survived 10 years of me growing up and using yet still looked and worked like new shame
it didn't survive the RTC :(
Had a Muddyfox Edge for about 8 years now. It's the best and has never let me down despite the
abuse and neglect I've given it. Should be higher up the list than this!
65Genesis
Great durability and good performance. Everyone should have a genesis bike. Dual disk brakes,
double butted frame and 27 speeds to make a perfect bike.
I have a genesis dual track 2 and it is absolutely amazing. I think it should be above bianchi at
least.
Spectacular performance and I would choose it over any other bike make.

66Rock Machine
it just rocks as the name says for itself
67Boardman Bikes
Very under rated bikes. Bike snobs tend to dismiss them due to the crappy company that has sole
retail rights in the UK.
I have the Hardtail pro, it retails at £999 in the UK, but it knocks the socks off the £1500
"trendier" brands.
Awesome machine just eats up the miles with ease. Could never be without it now. Absolute first
class machine.
68Proton Bikes

71Gravity
72Voodoo
This bike is very uncommon, this is why it ranks so low. If it were more popular, people would
come to realise that it is a bike that belongs in the top ten due to its superior quality
