IN ROOMS LIKE THIS ONE, THE
HEAVY FURNITURE IS LOCATED
IN 2/3RDS OF THE ROOM.

BALANCE

IN THIS ROOM, IT SHOWS


SYMMETRICAL BALANCE BY
HAVING THE T.V. IN THE
CENTER, & TWO COUCHES
ON EACH SIDE, PLANTS, ETC..
EACH SIDE OF THE ROOM IS
PERFECTLY BALANCED. IT
GIVES THE ROOM A FEELING
OF CALMNESS.

RHYTHM PROGRESSION IS
WHEN YOU YOU TAKE THE
ELEMENT IN THE ROOM
YOU’RE WORKING WITH AND
INCREASE OR DECREASE IT.
IN THIS ROOM IT IS DONE BY
THE PROGRESSION OF THE
STAIRS GOING UP, AS WELL AS
THE PICTURES GOING UP THE
STAIRS.
RHYTHM-
TRANSITION

TRANSITION IS A SMOOTHER
FLOW THAN THE OTHER
RHYTHMS. THIS IS USUALLY
DONE BY USING A SLIGHTLY
CURVED LINE THAT LEADS THE
EYE EITHER UP OR DOWN. IN
THIS ROOM IT IS DONE WITH
THE STAIRS. THERE IS A
SLIGHT CURVE THAT LEADS
OUR EYES UP THEM.
RHYTHM-
OPPOSITION
THIS PRINCIPLE INVOLVES THE
CONTRAST OF TWO THINGS,
WHETHER IT BE COLOR, SHAPE,
ETC. TO CREATE A RHYTHM. IT
CREATES A CONTRAST. IN THIS
ROOM THIS IS DONE USING
BLACK AND WHITE COLORS, AND
LOTS OF CONTRASTING SHAPES
CREATING A RHYTHM WITHIN
THE ROOM.
EMPHASIS

AN EMPHASIS IN A ROOM MEANS


THAT THERE IS A MAIN FOCUS OF
THE ROOM. THIS COULD BE AN
ARCHITECTURAL FEATURE OR A
PIECE OF FURNITURE. IT IS A
FEATURE OF THE ROOM THAT
DRAWS THE EYE INTO THE
ROOM. IN THIS ROOM A LOT OF
THE EMPHASIS IS FOCUSED
TOWARDS BOTH THE WINDOW
AND THE BATHTUB.
HARMONY

HARMONY IS HOW ALL THE


ELEMENTS OF YOUR DESIGN FIT
TOGETHER. THESE CAN BE
COLORS, SHAPES, ETC.. IN THIS
ROOM FOR EX. THE COLORS
ARE ALL EITHER THE SAME OR
SIMILAR. THE SHAPES THAT ARE
IN THE ROOM ARE ALSO
SIMILAR. THERE IS A SENSE OF
TOGETHERNESS IN THE DESIGN.

OPEN
SPACE

OPEN SPACE IS THE CONCEPT


OF MAKING THE SPACE YOU ARE
WORKING WITH SEEM OPEN
AND SPACIOUS EVEN IF IT
REALLY ISN’T. FOR EX. THE HIGH
CEILING AND OPEN WINDOWS
REALLY HELP CREATE A
SPACIOUS FEEL. THE ROOM
APPEARS MUCH BIGGER THAN
IT ACTUALLY IS.
CLOSED
SPACE

CLOSED SPACES CAN OFTEN


GIVE OFF A FEELING OF
COZINESS, BUT CAN EASILY FEEL
CLUTTERED AND
OVERWHELMING. FOR EX. IN THIS
ROOM THE DESIGNER CHOSE TO
FILL THE SPACE WITH FURNITURE
INSTEAD OF LEAVING THE SPACE
OPEN. THIS GIVES AN AT HOME
FEELING BUT COULD EASILY FEEL
CLUTTERED AND STUFFY.
INTERESTING
SHAPE

INTERESTING SHAPES ARE


USED IN A SPACE TO CREATE
A FUN AND INVITING SPACE.
IN THE KITCHEN PICTURED
ABOVE, THE SHAPES ON THE
WALL AND THE SHAPES OF
THE VASES ARE VERY
ABSTRACT. THIS GIVES AN
ELEMENT OF THE DESIGN.

FORM

FORM IS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF


HARMONY AND BALANCE WITHIN
A SPACE USING FORMS. THESE
FORMS CAN DIFFER OR BE THE
SAME. THIS IS ALSO SOMETHING
THAT IS 3-D. IN THIS ROOM THE
WALLS STAND AS AN
INTERESTING FORM, AND ALSO
THE CHAIR IN THE LEFT CORNER.
LIGHT MASS

LIGHT MASS GIVES OFF THE


IMPRESSION OF A CLEAN AND
CALM SPACE. IT ISN’T GOING
TO FEEL STRESSFUL AND LIKE
THERE IS MUCH GOING ON, IT
IS SIMPLE. IN THIS ROOM THE
COLORS USED ARE VERY LIGHT
AND MINIMAL. THERE ISN’T A
LOT OF MASS IN THE ROOM, IT
FEELS BREATHABLE.
HEAVY
MASS

HEAVY MASS WHEN USED IN A


SPACE CAN MAKE IT FEEL
DOMINANT AND DIGNIFIED. IT IS
OFTEN USED WHEN TRYING TO
FILL A LARGE SPACE AND IS
MATCHED WITH FURNITURE THAT
IS ATTEMPTING TO FILL THAT
SPACE. IT GIVES OFF A SENSE OF
HEAVY WEIGHT, THIS IS DONE
THROUGH THICK FURNITURE AND
DARK COLORS.
VERTICAL
LINE
VERTICAL LINES ARE USED IN
A SPACE TO CREATE
STABILITY, AND STRENGTH. IN
THIS ROOM THERE ARE MANY
VERTICAL LINES. THE
FLOORS, THE CEILINGS, THE
FURNITURE, ETC.. IT LIFTS
THE EYE UPWARD AND IS
MOSTLY USED WHEN TRYING
TO PORTRAY FORMALNESS.
CURVED
LINE

CURVED LINES ALLOW FOR THE


FEELING OF BALANCE AND
COMFORT. THE WAY THAT
CURVED LINES ARE USED IN THIS
ROOM ARE MINIMAL BUT CHANGE
THE FEELING OF THE ROOM
ENTIRELY. THE ENTRANCE TO THE
LIVING ROOM IS CURVED AND
CREATES A BALANCE ALONG WITH
A FEW PIECES OF FURNITURE.
SMOOTH
TEXTURE

SMOOTH TEXTURES MAKE A


ROOM FEEL MORE SLEEK
AND FORMAL. IT GIVES A
COOL AND SOFT
IMPRESSION. SHINY
TEXTURES ESPECIALLY MAKE
A ROOM LIKE THIS ONE FEEL
THIS WAY. IT GIVES OFF A
LUXURIOUS FEELING.

LIKE THIS ONE MAKE A ROOM
FEEL MORE GROUNDED AND
INTIMATE. IN THIS ROOM THIS
IS DONE BY USING VERY
MINIMAL SMOOTH TEXTURES,
EVERYTHING LOOKS LIKE IT
HAS A ROUGH TEXTURE. IT IS
ALSO DONE THROUGH THE
DARKER COLORS.
PATTERN

PATTERN CREATES AN
ILLUSTRATIVE PERCEPTION IN A
ROOM, MEANING IT COULD BE A
REPEATING PATTERN OR SHAPE
THAT GIVES THE ROOM A FUN
FEELING. IN THIS ROOM THERE
ARE MANY PATTERNS, STARTING
WITH THE WALLPAPER, THE
PICTURE ON THE WALL, AND THE
PILLOWS.

LIGHT
HAVING NATURAL LIGHT OVER
ARTIFICIAL CREATES A LIVE
FEELING WITHIN IN A SPACE, IT
LOOKS MORE EFFICIENT
BECAUSE YOU ARE USING
LESS ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING. IN
THIS ROOM IN LOOKS A LOT
MORE BRIGHT AND HAPPY
DUE TO ALL THE NATURAL
