The document contains three physics problems: 1) A thin film interference problem calculating the wavelength and color of light passing through a soap bubble. The wavelength is calculated to be 440nm, corresponding to the color violet. 2) A Malus' law problem calculating the intensity of polarized light before and after passing through two polarizers. The initial intensity is calculated to be 50 W/m2 and the final intensity is 18.75 W/m2. 3) A diffraction grating problem calculating the width of the central maximum for light passing through single slits. For a blue-violet light the width is calculated to be 0.018m and for a green light it is calculated to be

Thin Film Interference

Unusual colors can be seen on soap bubbles when light passes through them.
Calculate the wavelength of light passing through the soap bubbles if the light
passes through 2.2 x 10-7m soap. After calculating the wavelength, determine the
color of the light. Use m=1.
Use the information below for basis:

Malu’s Law Problem

If the intensity of the light that passes through polarizer 1 is 25 W/m² and polarizer
2 that makes an angle of 30° with the axis of the first polarizer , find the Intensity
before it passes through the first polarizer (i0) and the intensity after it passes
through the second polarizer(i2).

DIFFRACTION/SINGLE-SLIT
1) White light falls on a single slit that is 0.050mm wide.A screen is placed 1.00 m
away. A student puts a blue-violet filter (ƛ= 441nm) over the slit.
• Calculate the width of the central bright band for each of the two filters.

2) A monochromatic green light of wavelength 789 nm falls on a single slit with a

width of 0.085 mm.The slit is located 70 cm from a screen. How wide will the
central light band be
Answer Key:

Thin Film Interference

Given: t= 2.2x10-7 m or 220 nm

m=1

Asked: λ=?

Color: ?

Formula: 2t= mλ

Solution: 2(2.2x10-7 m) = 1(λ)

Answer: 4.4x10-7 m or 440nm = λ

Color: Violet

Malu’s law answer

I₁ = 1 / 2 Iₒ

25 = 1 Iₒ / 2

Iₒ= 50 W/m²

I₂ = I1COS²THETA

I₂ = 25 W/m² (cos² (30°))

I₂ = 75/4 or 18.75 W/m2

DIFFRACTION/SINGLE-SLIT

SOLUTION:

1) Given: ƛ=441 nm – 4.41 x 10^ -7 m

w= 0.050 mm – 5 x 10^ -5 m
L= 1 m

2x1= 2(4.41 x 10 ^ -7m)(1m) /5 x 10 ^-5

Answer=0.018m

2) Given: lambda= 789 nm – 7.89 x 10 ^-7 m

W= 0.085 mm – 8.5 x 10^-5 m
L= 70 cm – 0.7m

2x1=2(7.89 x 10^-7m)(0.7m) / 8.5 x 10^-5

Answer: 0.013m
