Social Contract Theory
The Social Contract, originally published as On the Social Contract; or, Principles of Political
Rights (French: Du contrat social; ou Principes du droit politique) by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, is a
1762 book in which Rousseau theorized about the best way to establish a political community
in the face of the problems of commercial society, which he had already identified in his
Discourse on Inequality (1754)
The Social Contract helped inspire political reforms or revolutions in Europe, especially in
France. The Social Contract argued against the idea that monarchs were divinely empowered to
legislate. Rousseau asserts that only the people, who are sovereign, have that all-powerful
right.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau, (born June 28, 1712, Geneva, Switzerland—died July 2, 1778,
Ermenonville, France), Swiss-born philosopher, writer, and political theorist whose treatises and
novels inspired the leaders of the French Revolution and the Romantic generation.
He qouted the term "Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains."

Main Work: The Social Contract
Governments should be chosen by the people.
Believed in the “great will”. That is what was best for the community was more
important than what was best for an individual.
Argued that civilization had corrupted man. Man was purer and virtuous in more
primitive (less developed) societies.
He felt that more modern societies led people caring about how they were seen by
others; people become greedy, envious, materialistic, etc.
