1 Introduction
Protection devices in the MiCOM 30 Series are described in detail in the respective technical
manuals as regards technical properties, functional characteristics, and proper handling
during installation, connection, commissioning, and operation.
However, the technical manuals are very comprehensive due to the innumerable features of
MiCOM 30 Series devices. Beginners may have a hard time with learning how to operate a
device.
The present documentation is intended to help those users get started. The intension is to
accompany the user by learning basic operating procedures and enabling him to continue
oneself.

2 How to Use
The concept of this documentation is to learn step by step, i.e. each exercise requires that the
previous exercise has been carried out successfully.
So please don’t jump! Start at the beginning. The number of pages is 24 only.

3 Local Control Panel

3.1 Basics

MiCOM 30 Series devices incorporate a comprehensive package of individual functions in

order to permit an extensive and universal scope of application. This results in a huge number
of data points (setting vales, signals, measured values, etc.) which are arranged in two ways:
• Function groups:
All data points are grouped in function groups according to the function they are associated
with.
• Folders:
All data points are also organized in different folders based on practical control
requirements.
The description of all data points in their entirety is called data model which is structured in the
way of a menu tree.
The menu tree begins with the device type at the top and then branches out below into the
three main folders entitled 'Parameters', 'Operation', and 'Events', which form the first folder
level. Below the first folder level are two more folder levels, so that the entire folder structure
consists of three main branches and a maximum of three folder levels.
At the bottom of each branch of folders, below the folder levels, are the various function
groups in which the individual data points are combined. Two different types of function
groups are provided:
• Global functions:
Functions operating globally allow the adaptation of the device’s interfaces to the protected
power system, offer support during commissioning and testing and provide continuously
updated information on the operation, as well as valuable analysis results following events
in the protected system.
• Main functions:
Main functions are autonomous function groups and can be individually configured or
disabled to suit a particular application. Function groups that are not required and have
been disabled by the user are masked completely (except for the configuration parameter)
and functional support is withdrawn from such groups.

3.2 Selecting Parameters

All data points (setting values, signals, measured values, etc.) are selected using the menu tree.
As the user navigates through the menu tree, the first two lines of the LCD display always show
the branch of the menu tree that is active, as selected by the user. The data points are
accessed at the lowest level of a menu tree branch. They are displayed with their plain text
description. The value associated with the selected data point, its meaning, and its unit of
measurement are displayed in the line below.
The desired parameter (e.g. ‘MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Config.paramters / LOC /
Decimal delimiter’) can be selected by pressing the keys ‘Left’, ‘Right’, ‘Up’ and ‘Down’:

Note: In the case that the Panel level is displayed please press the ENTER key first in order to
access the menu tree.

Px3x GettingStarted EN c.doc –6–

3.3 Changing Parameters

Although it is possible to select any data point in the menu tree and read the associated value
by pressing the keys, it is not possible to switch directly to the input mode. This safeguard
prevents unintended changes in the settings. For that prior to any parameter change password
has to be entered.

3.4 Cold Restart

Many problems may occur due to the fact that the setting status of the device is difficult for the
user to see what’s going on. Regarding these problems it’s recommended to intialize a cold
restart in order to put the device in it’s default status.
Prior to initializing a cold restart please ensure that the device is disabled
(‘MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Functionparamters / Global / MAIN / Protection enabled’):

Par/Func/Glob/MAIN
Protection enabled
No (=off)

In case the device is disabled a cold restart can be initialized

(‘MiCOM Px3x / Operation / Control and Testing / MAIN / Cold restart’):

Oper/CrtlTest/MAIN
Cold restart
don't execute

Please change the value to ‘execute’ by the procedure described in chapter 3.3:

Oper/CrtlTest/MAIN
Cold restart
execute

and press the ENTER key. The device will reboot:

********************
**** REBOOT *****
********************
********************

TEST
>>>>>>>>

Note: After a cold restart any special setting has been deleted and all records have been
cleared. All parameters are set to their default value.

Px3x GettingStarted EN c.doc –8–

3.5 LED ‘ALARM’

After the reboot of the device the ALARM LED is ‘on’ due to a deliberate distortion of the
parameter checksum which initializes the desired cold restart automatically.
Please readout the corresponding entries in the monitoring signal memory
(‘MiCOM Px3x / Operation / Operating data rec. / MT_RC / Mon. signal record.’):

Oper/Rec/MT_RC
Mon. signal record.

Mon. signal record. Mon. signal record.

For detailed information concerning ALARM LED please refer to chapter 10 ‘Troubleshooting’
of the corresponding manual.

In order to switch off the ALARM LED please clear the monitoring signal memory
(‘MiCOM Px3x / Operation / Control and Testing / MT_RC / Reset recording’):

Oper/CrtlTest/MT_RC

and press the ENTER key. The number of entries in the monitoring signal memory will be ‘0’
now and the ALARM LED will go ‘off’:

Oper/CrtlTest/MT_RC
Reset recording

–9– Px3x GettingStarted EN c.doc

3.6 LED ‘OUT Of SERVICE’

After the reboot of the device the OUT OF SERVICE LED is ‘on’. In order to switch off the OUT
OF SERVICE LED please enable the device by changing the value of the corresponding
parameter by the procedure described in chapter 0:

Par/Func/Glob/MAIN
Protection enabled
Yes (=on)

Note: Status ‘on’ of OUT OF SERVICE LED may occur due to different reasons. At least one of
the following 3 parameters is not set as follows:
Output relays may not be blocked:

Par/Func/Glob/OUTP
Outp.rel.block USER
No

Device must be enabled generally as described above:

Par/Func/Glob/MAIN
Protection enabled
Yes (=on)

Trip command(s) may not be blocked:

Par/Func/Glob/MAIN
Trip cmd.block. USER
No

Status ‘on’ of OUT OF SERVICE LED may occur as well since the self-monitoring
function has detected an internal fault of the device. In that case the ALARM LED is ‘on’
too. Please readout the corresponding entries in the monitoring signal memory as
described in chapter 3.5. For detailed information concerning ALARM LED please refer
to chapter 10 ‘Troubleshooting’ of the corresponding manual.

Px3x GettingStarted EN c.doc – 10 –

3.7 Configuring and Enabling of Function Groups

After the reboot of the device the function groups of all main functions (such as IDMT, DIST,
DIFF, …) are disabled.
In order to enable a function group (e.g. ‘DIFF’: ‘Differential Protection’) the desired function
group has to be configured first. Please select the corresponding configuration parameter and
change it accordingly by the procedures described in chapters 3.2 and 3.3
(e.g. ‘MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Config.paramters / DIFF / Function group DIFF’):

Par/Conf/DIFF
Function group DIFF
With

Having configured the desired function group all related parameters and signals are
displayed. Now enabling of the function group is possible. Please select the corresponding
function parameter and change it accordingly by the procedures described in chapters 3.2 and
3.3 (e.g. ‘MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Function paramters / General functions / DIFF /
General enable USER’):

Par/Func/Gen/DIFF
General enable USER
Yes

Having enabled the desired function group generally the setting of the active parameter subset
determines whether the corresponding function is actually enabled or not. For the following
example differential protection will be enabled only if parameter subset 1 is actually active
(‘MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Function paramters / Parameter subset 1 / DIFF /
Enable … ’):

Par/Func/PS1/DIFF Par/Func/PS1/DIFF
Enable PS1 Enable PS2
Yes No

Par/Func/PS1/DIFF Par/Func/PS1/DIFF
Enable PS3 Enable PS4
No No

Note: The parameter subset actually active at a particular time may be determined by
scanning the corresponding logic state signal (‘MiCOM Px3x / Operation / Cyclic
measurements / Log. state signals / PSS / Actual param. subset’).

– 11 – Px3x GettingStarted EN c.doc

3.8 Tripping Matrix and Configuration of Output Relays

It’s important to know that the trip signals of the various protection functions are not suitable
for trip command purposes due to their undefined timing.

Note: Never use a trip signal to operate the circuit breaker directly! Always use a trip
command!
For command purposes MiCOM 30 Series devices provide at least 2 trip commands. The
functions to effect a trip can be selected by setting an 'm out of n' parameter independently for
each of them (e.g. ‘MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Function parameters / Global / MAIN /
Fct.assig.trip cmd.1’):

Par/Func/Glob/MAIN
Fct.assig.trip cmd.1

For example the following 2 trip signals are assigned to trip command 1:

Par/Func/Glob/MAIN Par/Func/Glob/MAIN
Fct.assig.trip cmd.1 Fct.assig.trip cmd.1
#01 DIFF OR #02 MAIN
Trip signal Manual trip signal

Having assigned the trip command the corresponding signal may be assigned to the desired
output relay. We recommend to use output relay 01 on the power supply module which
provides 2 N/O contacts (‘MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Config. parameters / OUTP / Fct.
assignm. K 2001’):

Par/Conf/OUTP
Fct. assignm. K 2001
MAIN
Gen. trip command 1

Furthermore we recommend to use output relay 08 on the power supply module as watchdog
contact (‘MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Config. parameters / OUTP / Fct. assignm. K 2008’):

Par/Conf/OUTP Par/Conf/OUTP
Fct. assignm. K 2008 Oper. mode K 2008
MAIN NE updating
Blocked/faulty

This output relay provides a C/O contact. The operation mode (‘MiCOM Px3x / Parameters /
Config. parameters / OUTP / Oper. mode K 2008’) has to be set as ‘NE updating’.

Px3x GettingStarted EN c.doc – 12 –

3.9 Latching and Resetting of Trip Commands

A trip command which has been assigned according to chapter 3.8 may be latched by
appropriate setting. MiCOM 30 Series devices provide individual setting of each of the trip
commands (e.g. ‘MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Function parameters / Global / MAIN /
Latching trip cmd.1’):

Par/Func/Glob/MAIN
Latching trip cmd.1
Yes

Note: If a trip command is assigned to several output relays latching of the trip command will
be applied automatically to all associated output relays.

In order to release the latching of trip commands please use the corresponding resetting
function (‘MiCOM Px3x / Operation / Control and Testing / MAIN / Rset.latch.trip USER’):

Oper/CrtlTest/MAIN
Rset.latch.trip USER
don't execute

Please enter the input mode, change the value to ‘execute’ by the procedure described in
chapter 3.3:

Oper/CrtlTest/MAIN
Rset.latch.trip USER
execute

and press the ENTER key. Latching of the trip commands will reset provided that the associated
trip signals have reset.

4.3 Readout of the Data Model

It may happen that S&R-103 cannot create the default setting file due to the lack of the
corresponding data model:

In that case you can readout (Communication / Read Data Model...) and store the data model
in the preset folder:

Now a new default settings file can be created manually (File / New...):

by selecting the desired combination of device type and SW version (which has to be equal to
the data model version):

or you repeat the procedure described in chapter 4.2.

– 17 – Px3x GettingStarted EN c.doc

4.4 Identification of the Fitted Modules

The number of inputs and outputs of any MiCOM 30 Series device varies depending on the
ordered optional modules. S&R-103 will display always the maximum if the design version of
the particular device is unknown. Therefore we recommend to readout the design version first
before changing parameters. Assignments to inputs and outputs which are not available will
be avoided.

In order to readout the fitted modules please open the dialog box ‘Design Version’ (Tools /
Design Version…) and click the button ‘Update…’:

Now S&R-103 starts in communication with the device:

Note: In case the particular device is not handy the available inputs and outputs may be set
manually. For this please click the button ‘Definition…’.

Px3x GettingStarted EN c.doc – 18 –

4.5 Readout of the Setting

In order to readout the settings please highlight the folder ‘Parameters’ in the menu tree and
click the corresponding icon in the toolbar (Communication / Read Value):
