1. Blocking is crucial on defense. List possible reasons on why a team uses blocking in
a game?
Blocking in volleyball is a method of defending a spike attack in which the
defensive team jumps up at the net and stops the spike from crossing the net by
contacting it with the hands and arms. It is the first line of defense against an attacking
opponent. A team uses blocking in a game due to the following reasons:
To repel the ball coming from the attacker.
To stop the opposing team from spiking, bumping or tipping the ball successfully
into their court.
So that the ball will stay on the opponent's side and prevent them from getting a
point.
2. Why is the overhead pass or set important in Volleyball game?
The setter in a volleyball game is much like the quarterback in football or the
point guard in basketball. They are in charge of the offense. They decide who should get
the ball and when. It doesn’t matter how good a team's hitters are if it doesn't have
a setter that can consistently deliver a good ball to hit. This is how important the
overhead pass or set in a volleyball game. It involves hitting the ball using an overhead
playing motion to direct the ball to your teammate. The ball is played with the fingers
using an overhead setting action. Apparently, the goal of passing is to prevent the ball
from landing on the court.
Not all players have the same level of skills. For example, a player may not be as
comfortable overhead passing as they are forearm passing. Therefore, the player should
be inclined to volleyball pass with the forearms in game situations until overhead passing
skills are further developed. Some of the advantages of overhead passing are the ability
of passing the ball quickly to the hitter with a low trajectory. While a pass off the
forearms requires a trajectory arc, the overhead pass doesn't. Another thing is that,
overhead passing is more accurate compared to other types.
3. What is the server's primary responsibility?
The server’s primary responsibility is to get the ball over the net and within the
court. The serve must be returned with a forearm pass. No setting and or attacking. An
underhand serve is performed with a closed fist, using the heel of the hand as the hitting
surface. It is also important to know that the server's responsibility is not just to serve the
ball into the court or to serve aces but also, to serve the ball in a way that it makes it
easier for the team to block and play defense.
4. When does a team gain a point? Cite some examples.
There are two scoring methods used for volleyball. The first is known as sideout
scoring, which basically means the only team that can score is the team that is serving. If
the non-serving team hits the ball in the opponents' court or their opponents make an
error, they earn the right to serve only. With rally scoring, either team can score
regardless of who the serving team is. Games typically must be won by a minimum of
two points with both scoring systems.
Some of the ways where a team can gain a point are:
By successfully landing the ball on the opponent’s side of the court
When the opponent hits the ball more than three times before returning the ball
over the net
When the opponent hits the ball outside of the legal borderline
When the opponent’s team commits a service fault
When the opponent touches the ball on the other side before the player’s attack hit
When the opponent touches the net while playing the ball
5. When does a team rotate?
A team only rotates in volleyball if they receive a serve after winning a rally with
the other team. If a team receives the serve, all players except the libero must rotate once
clockwise, so that the new server rotates from the right front to the right back of the
court. Each time a team wins a point or before they start the serve, the serving team
rotates clockwise. They earn a point, the right to serve and the right to rotate. The team
that wins the right to serve at the end of a rally will rotate. The team that lost the point
will not rotate.
