Choosing a chart
There are several different ways of showing the results of a survey, and it’s important
to choose the best way to show your results clearly.
Vertical bar charts are useful for comparing a few different groups or categories.
For example, if you want to show how often your friends watch TV, you can
write the number of friends on the y-axis (the vertical line) and the groups or
categories (how often they watch TV) on the x-axis (the horizontal line).
If you have a lot of groups or categories, a horizontal bar chart is better than a
vertical one. To show what TV shows your friends like best, you can write the
number of people on the x-axis and the categories (TV shows) on the y-axis.
This takes up less space, but still shows the results of your survey very clearly.
Line charts show how a situation changes over time. You could use a line chart
to show how popular a TV show is with your friends. Like a bar chart, a line
chart has an x-axis and a y-axis. You can write the number of people who watch
the show on the y-axis and show the time scale on the x-axis.
Pie charts are a great way to show percentages. The pie (or circle) makes up
100% of the people you surveyed. Each section of the pie shows one
preference or response.
Make sure you choose the best kind of chart to show the results of your survey.
